So I've come across a handful of paleohackers from North Carolina, and I was really curious to know where you get your grassfed beef and other meat from. My husband used to order beef from Aldersprings with friends, but the price combined with the damaged cuts that he'd receive due to shipping was enough to make him want to switch.

After looking at the eatwild website, we found a local farm that seemed to suit our needs called Double R Cattle Services. They don't use pesticides, and their cows are start to finish grassfed (the last time we went to the farm, there was a total of 1 cow who was not grassfed because she was an orphan).They are a wonderful family who has been living and farming the land for generations. We drive to their farm and see their kids playing with goats, and the husband out in his overalls tending the cattle. The cattle have tons of space to roam and look happy. Best of all? Cheap! If you buy a quarter cow, you get 80lbs of ground beef and all cuts for $5.50/lb. I believe they send their cows to be processed quarterly, and have a sale on the 'older' beef to make room for the new beef when they get it in. In terms of taste, I think it's rather good. I rendered fat from some bones last week and the smell was MUCH milder than the grassfed bones that I got from Whole Foods.
Oh, and they are also apparently well known for their strawberries, which they grow on their property every spring. And I think the man's brother raises pigs and sheep.... AKA we'll hopefully be getting some of them soon enough :) We like the idea of being able to get a lot in one place. This is such a culture shock for me since I've lived in New York my entire life!
I'm curious to know where others in NC get their beef, as well as other pastured items like pork and lamb. The latter have been harder to come by. Hope we can all help one another!
I live in Raleigh, and hit the Raleigh Farmer's Market once or twice a week. They have everything there, if it's in season, plus some. Local honey too, which I love if it comes with the honeycomb in it. Lamb, pork, and organic produce are available. My most frequent meat purchases are ground beef ($6/lb) and pastured eggs ($4/doz), as well as some beef liver and lamb organs (both $5/lb, I think), all from Rare Earth Farms.
Look up your local Weston A Price chapter. I'll be spending this summer in Charlotte and was pleasantly surprised to find the Charlotte WAPF chapter has a great resource page. There are several chapters in NC besides Charlotte as well.

I visited the farm once too and it checks out. Very clean, 100% grassfed, organic, etc.
I don't have a freezer so I couldn't do a whole quarter of a cow :( I just go to the State Farmers Market. There's some smaller farmers' markets in the Triangle that usually have some local butchers with really good meats. I think some of the CSAs have meat options too.
I live in the Raleigh area and my family and I get grass-fed beef from a number of sources--Whole Foods and Carolina Grown (which is a local vegetable, fruit and high-quality meat company that delivers food to your doorstep soon after harvest). Currently, though, our source of grass-fed meat is a cow we split with some friends of ours who acquired it from a Virginian farm.
I'm in Hendersonville, NC near Asheville. Asheville has great tailgate markets, farms, and stores like co-ops, Greenlife grocery, and Earth Fair. In Hendersonville I go to a farm in Flat Rock (Three Arrows) for beef. When the tailgate market opens, I can get local poultry, eggs, pork, and organic veggies. During the in season 90% of our food comes from the tailgate markets. The prices in Hendersonville are a little better than Asheville too.
I'm in Wake Forest (just outside of Raleigh) and have access to fantastic farmers and farmer's markets here. I buy most of my grass-fed beef, pastured pork, chicken, eggs, and turkey from a local farmer about 20 minutes away in Bunn called Ray Family Farm. If I need to supplement I run into Whole Foods and get the Baldwin Beef they sell there (the only grass-fed/finished producer they sell in this area) or order from US Wellness Meats and Tropical Traditions when they have sales.
I'd really like to get a good (affordable!) fully-pastured lamb source locally but I think it's always going to be a bit more than I'd like to spend from what I've noticed.
