Allright so this a weird thing. About two weeks ago I noticed a pungent odor and blamed it on an extended stay at the inlaws. A week later... it's still here.

I noticed today that while eating a piece of pork I smelled a similar smell.

Problem is I only eat it 2 x a week and is my savior from a chicken thick diet. I've eaten the pork extensively for months and only noticed two weeks ago. Any other ideas on what may cause this and get it stopped?

The pork smells? Or something else? – Matt Mar 18 2012 at 2:56
I'm not sure anymore. I smell it on me at weird times (like at work). I didn't know what it was until I was chewing some meat off the bone and thought "that's THAT smell". Maybe I was even wrongly attributing it to the pork. I'm just desperate to not feel like I have some odor problem – Erin H Mar 18 2012 at 4:30
I guess to clarify what I'm asking... Am I the only person that experienced this? Why is it, that I've at this way for months, but in the last two weeks just now experience the smell issue? How can I fix it? and is it worth losing a protein source over if you were in my situation? – Erin H Mar 18 2012 at 4:39

No, you're not alone. I have always smelled an odor with pork. When I still had my gallbladder, pork had to be boiled/simmered in water because whatever gave me a bellyache (and had that odor) was removed by cooking in water.

I still boil/simmer it because it tastes so much better to me that way. I "smell the smell" while it's cooking in water but it's gone from the pork when I eat it. Once it's fully cooked, I just stick it under the broiler to brown it a little or bake it in a sauce.

I don't know about you, but I don't have the odor problem with bacon and ham, which is nice although neither of those is a staple for me now.

So why don't you just eat some beef instead? Maybe it is time for change.

I do eat beef. Quite often... it's just we are between butchering cycles right now – Erin H Mar 18 2012 at 4:28

I think the pork from Costco became more smelly lately... You may be undercooking it as well...

Nope. I was raised by a mom who demanded all pork be cooked to death. If she boiled the pork chops/ribs before browning, no problem; if not, I could taste the "whatever" and frequently got a belly ache. – Nance Mar 18 2012 at 16:18

hmmm I am notorious for not cooking my meat thoroughly. I might try cooking it more.

I got the questionable pork at two separate stores (neither costco actually) So the cooking it might be the answer

For the time being I'll lay off pork. I only have one pork item in the freezer (and it's a huge loin that roasts as compared to the pork steaks) so I'll just let it settle out

ok, if it's store bought then I might suspect the pork. Is this conventionally raised grocery store pork? A lot of that has a nasty odor. Have you tried brining your pork before cooking? That can take care of a lot of that: whatscookingamerica.net/Pork/BriningPork.htm If it's pastured pork, I would not expect the nasty odor. – arugula Jun 5 at 22:06

Might be slightly off? You don't hang pork like you would beef or lamb...

You should also be able to tell you've eaten pork when you pee.

Was it cheap pork? Pork from pigs that are fed garbage smells like garbage. I wouldn't be surprised if that could impart smelliness on people who eat it.

Do you have an irrational fear of bacon? Does bacon frying in a pan cause a lone tear to stream down your face? If you wrap bacon in a piece of bacon, how does it make you feel? Did the last sentence arouse anyone else beside me?

If you've answered yes or no to most of these, though I'm not a doctor, it would sound like you haven’t' developed a bacon allergy and life is still worth living.

As far as the smell goes…elimination diet…eat no pork for a day…the next day, eat nothing but pork…death by bacon…there’s worse ways to go.

Truth.

Maybe it's androstenone and/or skatalone. AKA boar taint:
