Yeah just use Palm Oil. – balor123 Mar 19 2012 at 21:22
Well, it is probably hard to get your hands on adorable baby seal oil... If you can't eat Palm Oil, butter/ghee and coconut oil would suffice. – August May 9 at 20:46

You can get high quality palm shortening (certified organic, non-hydrogenated). It is flavorless and scentless -- unlike unrefined palm oil -- and can therefore be used for more types of cooking.

I don't like palm oil's flavor. So palm shortening is very appealing.

You can substitute ... palm oil. Just make sure it's unrefined and absolutely sure it's not hydrogenated. Avoid the shortening, stick with the oil.

If you must replace it, coconut oil should work in place of palm oil, depending on what you are making.

Checkout this Mark's Daily Apple post for more info.

... also, search PH, too -- this has been brought up before.

Why is palm shortening bad? I've seen this ingredient used in some Paleo baking recipes. :) – CoconutWaterisGood Mar 19 2012 at 20:29

At one point in the recent past, virtually all vegetable shortening was hydrogenated -- basically full of the villainy of trans fat. Nowadays, food processors have methods to make vegetable shortening without always hydrogenating the oils. For me, I'll still with natural fats and oils -- I really don't want to start using a product that could be as bad as trans fats were one day. – greymouser Mar 19 2012 at 20:39

Palm Oil plantations are leading to huge destruction of virgin rainforests, eg. in Indonesia, where the orangutan is severely threatened due to loss of habitat - precisely these rainforests! Please replace palm oil products wherever you can!

Shortening is killing humans. I don't know what coconut oil kills, but it's probably uglier than orangutans. – August May 9 at 20:35

Please, please, please, stop letting yourself be scared by the mean people who pretend to teach you stuff. Your teachers are more dangerous to the planet than palm oil, and most of these recycling projects actually waste more resources. Usually, if it is a good idea to recycle something, someone will show up and pay you for it. If they make people do it, and use government money, it means the whole thing is a fraud. – August May 9 at 20:33
