I have severely dry/itchy skin for the past few years. Switching to paleo has helped immensely, but sometimes when I take cod liver oil I will get terrible cramps a few hours later and vomit or diarrhea everything out. What am I doing wrong? My only thought is too much fat but I only eat 1-3 eggs per day, tons of veggies and maybe some bacon or chicken.

Her are my questions:

How much do you take and when? With food? Without? Do you regulate how much you take based on your fat intake of the day? Any advice will be helpful as I'm scared to take it and become a walking time bomb.

When do you take your cod liver oil? Is it alone, on an empty stomach, early in the morning, etc? Also, what form are you taking it in? – Christina Mar 20 2012 at 5:12
I don't see why you'd take it. Cod liver oil is unnecessary and lots of people have problems with it (eg. low libido, skin issues, ...). If you want to improve your skin, reduce PUFA by eating coconut oil, beef and lamb instead of chicken and pork. – Korion Mar 20 2012 at 8:07
Usually take pure CLO an hour after I eat a meal, straight from the refrigerator. – oliveoyl Mar 21 2012 at 21:34

I take half a teaspoon of Green Pasture's Fermented CLO with pastured butter oil (cinnamon tingle flavored - yum!) about 30 minutes after I wake up in the morning (so I'm fasted). When I first started out with paleo, my dosage was 1 teaspoon a day and as my health got better, I reduced to the 1/2 teaspoon I take today. I have not had any issues with it.

I actually switched to the fermented cod liver oil after having issues with the "traditional" fish oil tablets (fish burps, indigestion, gas, bloating, diarrhea).

I take the same Green Pastures CLO plus high vitamin butter oil. I now miss the cinnamon zip each morning if I forget, I was worried it would be a bad taste, but I love it. I too have had no negative side effects, except when I take too much. I might have had a batch with a lot of vitamin A though. Half teaspoon for me everyday now. – Anondson Apr 9 2012 at 3:26

Oliveoyl, I'm sorry about the troubles. Do you keep your CLO in the refrigerator?

I have never had trouble with mine. Perhaps your oil has gone rancid.

Is there a carrier oil for the CLO, or some other ingredient, or is it pure CLO?

Have you tried other brands? There is definitely a difference in brands.

Before I eat breakfast, I take two teaspoons of Quantum CLO with a dab of pastured butter, and take Vit. D3 drops (carrier oil is olive) with a dab of butter at the same time. I drink black tea w/ hwc, beef fat or butter at that time, too.

That seems like a lot of Vit. D? Did you progress up to those high doses? – oliveoyl Mar 21 2012 at 21:35
Hi, Oliveoyl. :) Each brand of CLO contains a different amount of Vit. A and D, as well as DHA and EPA; and each brand of Vit D has a different amount number of units of D3 per drop. I have never had any unpleasant or odd reactions or symptoms to the brands and amounts I use. I did not post how many units of D3, EPA/DHA, or A/D the CLO contains, nor did I post how many units of D3 I take. I took less in previous years and found it helpful to increase both CLO and D3. Each person has his or her own needs and requirements. I wish you happy experimenting. :) – PaleoGran Mar 22 2012 at 15:16
