One thing I picked up from listening to and reading some of Ray Peat's stuff was that most ice creams contain thickeners and stabilizers, including cellulose, and that virtually only Haagen Dazs is legitimate ice cream anymore.
Now I see that they're working cellulose into hot dogs to make them "healthier," and while I don't buy hot dogs I'm going to check any frozen meat products closely in the future.
Ice cream and hot dogs aren't paleo, but I also know that the only heavy whipping cream I can find has thickeners and stabilizers in it. Anyone have a "hit list" of quietly modified foods (that would normally be considered paleo) to watch out for?
It's the higher-temp pasturization that requires that they add the stablizers and gums to the heavy cream. I'm lucky to have found a source of vat-pasturized Jersery cream in bottles. But it's not cheap, around $4 a pint. There's also one local commercial dairy in our area that isn't high-temp pasturizing their whipping cream, and oddly enough, it's the cheapest of all the brands, and doesn't have stabilizers. Alpenrose, if you're in the NW. It doesn't taste nearly as good as the grass fed Jersey stuff, however, but I'll buy it if my source of the good stuff has run out.
Not sure about a "hit list" but I will say there's thickening agents and stabilizers in almost anything in a package these days...
Read the labels... I can't say it enough. I used to buy all sorts of things when I first was learning the ropes and during hurried trips to Whole Foods and brought them home thinking I did well. Then I do a once-over of the label again and find out there's something I dont want in there.
