Alright guys I'm going to be in St. Louis for business for about a week. What are some of the best paleo spots there? Or where are some places that might be worth a little cheat, I have celiacs so I'm limited on my cheats.
SALT!!!! I cannot express this enough. I go in and will have the frisee salad with poached egg and jowl bacon ($6), and either the pork and fennel meatballs with blackberry preserves ($6) or the pork belly with pickled vegetables ($8 I think?). A lot of the small plates are straight paleo like the bone marrow, scallop, or mussels w/ chorizo.
The large plates are great too: Braised pork cheek with celeriac mash ($15), Trout with potato leek hash and spring salad.
I truly believe it's a paleo paradise.
Salt is located on Lindell between Newstead and Boyle... definitely check it out.
Here's their website: http://www.enjoysalt.com
I live in Saint Louis and have yet to go to Salt - now I'm TOTALLY sold, thanks Reesh!
Rooster is totally worth a breakfast cheat -- they're gluten free crepes are to die for.
Prime 1000 downtown has tons o' grassfed steaks, but is pretty expensive.
Local Harvest is a sweet neighborhood cafe that serves primarily local foods - I love the trout nicoise salad there (contains potatoes and greenbeans, just FYI) and they have market-price trout and beef specials that change every night. They're really relaxed, so if something on the menu isn't 100% paleo and you need it to be, they'd totally work with you to make it happen.
I hear really good things about Farmhaus, which also features local food, but I've never been.
Schlafly Bottleworks or Tap Room, Nora's Deli (for a gluten-free sandwich cheat), Home Wine Kitchen Also, "The Block" in Webster Groves, a butcher shop/bar/nice restaurant: http://theblockrestaurant.com/about/
You really should try Monarch. There is always something interesting on the menu. If your gluten free and want a slice of cheat pizza, there is PI pizza. It is made from a cornmeal crust and it is amazing. The entire restaurant is gluten free. What kind of budget or food are you looking for?
You must go to The Block in Webster Groves. They do all grass feed beef, and get all their food from local farmers. Lots of organics. They butcher their own meat (you can get it wrapped to go!) and there are a few real interesting items on the menu. Salads are wonderful! Very good!!
If anyone is looking for a very good, reasonably priced source of pastured, premium proteins in stl or the surrounding area, I can help. I own a company that sources well fed and cared for, heritage breed animals, for groups of people. Mac's Local Buys. We source pigs, cows, chickens and lambs by the whole animal. We take everything the processor will allow. All locally raised on pasture. You know, the good shit! Check out my site www.macslocalbuys.com or call me at 314-479-8155 for more info. Because we deal with the farmer and processor directly, we are able to secure the lowest prices and custom processing done by the"half or "side" of each animal. Cut and packed just as you ask. Like a Dream come true :-)
