Six weeks GRAIN FREE! Not hungry at all, BUT not losing weight either!

I'm so glad to find this forum!!! I've been grain free for 6 weeks and feel fantastic. I have not limited anything else till now other than cutting out all grains and legumes. The only dairy I eat is Greek yoghurt and cream in my coffee. I eat lots of veggies and fruit; sugar in my coffee and LOTS of nuts.

The transition to wheat free and then grain free was pretty easy I, had headaches for about a week but since then I have felt good. I do lack energy from about 2pm on though. Does anyone else experience the same?

I am female 5'4 - 137. I would like to get back to 120-125 perfect for my height and bone structure. My weight unfortunately has not moved at all.

I guess now I eliminate fruit or dairy, or the nuts?? Any suggestions for kick starting weight loss would be appreciated! Thanks :)

What about exercise? Do you do any strength training/walking/etc? – Susan Mar 22 2012 at 0:41

Stop eating, that will kickstart weight loss like a Chuck Norris roundhouse – Bill1102inf Mar 22 2012 at 2:11

Don't forget it's not so much about 'eliminating' but rather 'replacing' certain foods, otherwise you may be in danger of your body going into starvation mode which is not a good thing. Perhaps think about reducing those foods and adding in more meat and green veggies, you'll get the nutrients you need, feel satiated and hence be less inclined to overeat.

Going very low carb for a couple of weeks should throw you into ketosis, where your body burns fat instead of burning carbohydrates for energy. One way to do that is to temporarily drop the fruit and nuts, and limit the dairy, then start adding things back in after a couple of weeks.

I'm pretty much describing the first two steps of the Atkins diet, which I'm on (so I might be biased here ;) ) . It can be adapted for paleo, and they have the basic instructions on their website. (Just ignore their attempts to sell you the bars and shakes.)

There are also people who do other forms of low carb paleo. This non-profit low carber support forum has a paleo/Neanderthin section. Lots of good friendly people there willing to help you out!

Thanks so much. This all started when my Naturopath told me she suspected a hidden grain allergy was causing malabsorption of nutrients, low iron, etc, then I read "Wheat Belly" now I still can't believe I'm not eating grains and feeling good. Thanks for your suggestions. – Cristina Mar 22 2012 at 0:32
You're welcome! And I know what you mean. I can't believe I'm finding it easy to do this, either! Not only w/the grains, but with the sugar and candies. Make my own sugar-free chocolate, and just am not interested in the other anymore. – Frugal Jen Mar 22 2012 at 12:43

Dieting goes only so far. Get some exercise.

Another strategy to lose weight is to up the fibrous foods and reduce fat (over your current diet) with adequate protein. Sort of moderate carb (30-35%), moderate protein (20-25%) and moderate fat, where around 10-15% of the calories comes from fiber. Count the fiber calories as fat. Don't overdo fiber as it prevents absorption of minerals and vitamins, and get it from fruits or vegetable. You could get some part of the carbs from fruits or tubers, as you prefer. I would prefer tubers over fruits due to the fructose content.

Both fiber and proteins reduce food intake.
