Hi, I have a friend with hashimoto's (who has been gluten free for a long time) who is thinking about a ketogenic diet to lower fasting blood sugar and lose a few pounds. She's early 40s and fit, could maybe lose 10ish lbs but certainly at a normal weight.

I know low carb diets affect thyroid levels, is there any special precautions someone with hashimoto's should be aware of?

ketosis with Hashi's works ideally when it is mixed in a col envirnoment. In this manner you can bypass all thyroid function and get the brain to control the whole axis with the use of TRH alone. – The Quilt Mar 22 2012 at 11:54
So if you're a menopausal woman with Hashi's, ketosis + CT is the best way to go? What about calorie reduction? Will that help or hurt metabolic function? – Phoenix Mar 22 2012 at 13:27

Great question. I'd love to know the REAL answer. I have hypothyroidism and have been doing strict Paleo for about a year now with NO weight loss. I even started to count calories a few months ago, still NO weight loss. I often wonder if low carb is making my thyroid problems worse because there's really no other reason I could think of for not being able to lose ONE pound!

I remember reading Dr Kruse's blog saying that people with thyroid issues must fix these issues first with modern medicinal ways before they can lose weight or fix their Leptin. – Eugenia Mar 22 2012 at 4:19

I am in a similar boat and also looking for answers. I am 44, been primal for several months, have hypothyroid and have only lost about 5 pounds total, on a good day. (fluctuates). Been attempting the Leptin Reset (Jack Kruse) but find the eating within a half hour difficult, and reverting back to breakfast of decaf with cream and waiting til 1pm to eat lunch. NOt sure what to try next, I don't snack, exercise with yoga and walking. (gave up the heavy cardio because of the primal). I don't really do 'cheats' either, I would say I am 95% primal/paleo and while I feel better there does not seem to be any significant fat loss.

Pretty much the same problem here, I had my thyroid removed and am now on synthroid so per the TSH I'm not hypothyroid but I gained 20 lbs after the surgery a year ago and have been primal with lots of activity and haven't been able to shed the weight. There is something more to thyroid function and weight loss but the literature is lacking.

I am going through this with some success. Same story went on Paleo for 12 months lost some but not enough weight in first few weeks then nada for 18 months. Ketosis did not change envy thing for me eithe. Low cal and low fat also had no real effect. I went to see a naturopath who looked at sleep and stress - sorted that out along with some estrogen issues caused by the whole thyroid thing and on ketosis now I am having success down 25 kg and about 7 to go ! Don't give up keep looking for an answer
