Hello

I am moving to a new appartment, and have to redo my living arrangement. I would like some input how one might improve the furniture to accomodate better posture.

Specifically I read quite a lot. Mostly I read lying in bed with an extra pillow to prop up the head. I am not sure this is very good for the posture, also it is not very comfortable. I have been trying to figure out how to get a better solution for a comfortable reading position which does lead to slumping etc.

I have been experimenting with sitting cross legged for a period of time, though my inflexibility in the hips really hasn't allowed full transition to a more on the floor living arrangement.

I have also been trying a standing desk, which works to some extent, but I do not find it comfortable for reading.

Of course, I have also tried a stability ball, which probably is better than a standard chair, but again does not quite cut it.

Along these lines I did come across this webpage: http://www.zafu.net/articles.html

I am familiar with Esther Gokhale, and her approach which is highly recommended. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Steps-Pain-Free-Back-Solutions-Shoulder/dp/0979303605/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332678750&sr=8-1

Any suggestions?

i was looking at the "zen office" on zafu.net just the other day as an option/addition to my standing desk situation. if you like the meditation style stuff, this place has some options as well (no financial interest): samadhicushions.com – jodaro Jun 4 at 20:42

I started sleeping on the floor, well over a year ago now. I sleep on a few old packing blankets on a hardwood floor. I have found I get a more restful sleep, I am never stiff when I wake up and I do believe my posture has improved. I used to get shoulder pain occasionally before I started sleeping on the floor, now I never do.

Yes, I have been toying around with this also. I can sleep on super hard surfaces, but I usually suffer some discomfort from this. Although I do have trouble sleeping on soft beds. It is all about finding just the right softness I suppose. – Frederik Mar 26 2012 at 15:43

Josh, what position do you sleep in? I have tried sleeping on my side (usual position) on a lightly padded hard floor before and can't fall asleep because of pressure on my shoulder and hip, and I don't know what to do with my head. – RR Jun 4 at 22:27
@RR - I used to sleep on my side too and usually has stiff shoulders in the morning, when I started sleeping on the floor I trained myself to sleep on my back and have not has stiff shoulders since. I had to put a pillow on either side of me for about 2 weeks to train myself to sleep on my back. – Josh M Jun 5 at 14:13

Check out katysays.com. It's about restoring optimal alignment through natural movement and stretching. The author actually got rid of all her living room furniture!

Those things there are very expensive but you could find ways to emulate the posture on those pictures at home.

I'm doing so myself :-)
