The difference? well zucchini and cucumbers are long and green. Squash comes in many different sizes, shapes and colors. They all grow on vines. – gydle Mar 27 2012 at 7:18

Well they're vegetables so yea. I eat cucumbers plain, zucchini fried or steamed and squash is more a broad term. You get loads of different varieties just to confuse you more. But really just try them to find out for yourself. Or you know... try Google.

Hey Tom! Sounds like you're new - or hoping you are and not just attempting to be sly :)

Anyway - eating whole real food is what you're after.. and yes, squash fit into that category.

Some good resources: Whole 9/Whole 30 breaks things down nicely. Check out the blogs by Paul Jaminet, Mark Sisson, Robb Wolf, et al. Primal Blueprint is popular. And yes - you can literally google "paleo vegetables" and loads of results will come back :)

And to answer your question:

  • Zucchini and cucumber are both members of the botanical family Cucurbitaceae, which includes melons, squashes and gourds.
  • The cucumber is not very sweet and is part of the melon family
  • Zucchini is a variety of summer squash
  • Cucumbers contain more water. Zucchini have a meatier, stringier texture
  • You can eat either of them raw or pickled but the zucchini is great cooked

Zucchini are squash (they are known as "summer squash", along with other varieties). A cucumber is a gourd, I believe.

As vegetables, they are 100% paleo. Enjoy.

Did they exist 20,000 years ago? – Dave S. Mar 27 2012 at 14:57
who cares? Bacon didn't, either. – gydle Mar 28 2012 at 6:18
(I was being snarky...) What!? No bacon?? Oh man, that's the last straw - I am quitting paleo and going back to donuts, pizza and beer. After all, donuts = pizza. – Dave S. Mar 29 2012 at 14:41
