Well I'm pretty damn sure i've got SIBO, chronic constipation, bloating, the list goes on. But anyway, I'm getting mixed advice on what to eat/not to eat to get rid of SIBO or manage the symptoms while im waiting to see the G.I specialist.
Some people say no carb ( apparently that doesn't do much but lower all bacteria but not kill the overgrowth of bad) Some people say to get rid of all fructose/sucrose and eat starch, like potato ( not sweet) and brown/white rice with some green leafy vegies. Some people say to get rid of lactose, unless with a lactase supplement & some people say to get rid of all grains and stick to certain vegetables.
I've added soaked brown rice to my diet in the last 2 weeks because I've started school again and It's extremely convenient me to bring a bit( I never eat it by itself) to make up some calories. I'm hearing good and bad stuff about brown rice.
What's your opinion? And do you have any other suggestions of what I should be eating?
I don't think you should assume you have SIBO. There are so many conditions that can cause bloating and GI distress - parasites, candida, fructose malabsorption, allergies etc. I have IBS and I thought I might have SIBO but I don't. I do, however, have a parasite I'm now trying to get rid of.
Because I have excessive bloating, I eat pretty low starch which just exacerbates it. And low-FODMAPS too (no brassica veg or high-fructose fruits, etc). I do eat 1/3 cup white rice every day.
Without hearing the whole list of your symptoms (and not being a doctor!), I'll say that if I were in your situation, I would probably fast and rest for a few days, until I felt like I had a really good idea about what I needed to eat. I have done this before, when trip after trip to the doctor gave me nothing else to go on. A fast is an amazing way to get in touch with your body; I have gotten amazing insights and really learned how to be quiet and listen to my body. I feel like when I fast, rest, take baths, and get fresh air, my digestive system somehow heals itself. I wait and wait, and then after a few days I have a really strong urge to eat, and if I can eat simply for a few days, I feel amazing. My cravings are gone, and I have a very clear sense of what my body needs. I have done this with colds, gut probs, depression, etc. It's like a tool we were born with, that we have complete control over. Okay, I'm done. I sound like a fasting evangelist.
One of the good way to see if your symptoms are caused by excessive fermentation of the carbs you eat in your small intestines is to go on a very low-carb diet. Within 3-7 days, you should see improvements if it is the case.
Avoid all starches, fruits and sugar and limit yourself to a small serving of veggies at every meal. Complete with animal food (protein and fat) and more fat (coconut oil, avocado, olive oil) to get the energy your need.
If you get better, SIBO is a possibility and in that case, rice (white or brown) should be avoided for at least a few months. I suggest looking into the GAPS diet protocol to correct SIBO and heal your gut.
