Situation: You have a carb binge one night about 80-100g and you are carb sensitive.

in order to enter ketosis as soon as possible the next day. do you

A) intermittently fast

or

B) eat lots of fat and no protein or carbs.

Which one is more likely to induce a stronger and quicker Ketogenic state?

cyclical ketogenic diets regularly carb load then try to deplete glycogen to re-enter ketosis as quickly as possible.

no but its still enough to kick you out of ketosis considering its the alcohol i drank would inhibit fat burning. – Lucas Mar 29 2012 at 19:31
yes i know badly dubbed, but its not the question. Im asking about if fasting vs eating high fat.... which would allow for a quicker and stronger ketogenic response. im aware of the effects of exercise on muscle and liver glycogen depletion but the option of exercise is not part of the question despite its superior ability to establish a state of ketosis i merely want to examine the non exercise induced forms of ketosis for those times when exercise just isn't happening sleep deprivation vacation hungover etcetera or whatever the case may be...thanks for the answer though – Lucas Mar 29 2012 at 19:35

Neither. Ketosis is induced through the absence of carbohydrates. Thus, eating nothing vs. eating only fat == same result. Do whichever one feels right to you.

Well, you can acheive some level of ketosis in the presence of carbs using MCT oil (like coconut oil) and/or the amino acids lycine & luecine. – Dave S. Mar 29 2012 at 17:57

And epileptics sucessfully use a "modified Atkins" diet that is 30-40% CHO with MCT oil to generate ketones and it works as well as the strict (90% fat) ketogenic diet at controlling seizures. – Dave S. Mar 29 2012 at 18:17

Oops, sorry Dave. You're right. I thought ketosis required ketogenesis from body fat. Obviously the neurological benefits of ketone bodies doesn't vary by their source. – sheltron5000 Mar 30 2012 at 16:10

I drink coffee w/ heavy cream in the morning and sprint the sh*t out of a workout, and any juice left in me, I body weight tabatas (burpees, split squats, pull-ups, mountain climbers, and/or stationary bike).

that depletes it right outta ya, then I have a protein-y meal when I get hungry.

Fasting wins for me hands down. I do not want to say that a fast is an excuse to eat like crap, but it is kind of like church. You may have committed some food sins, but do your penance and there is no need to feel guilty about them anymore. I worship at the house of IF every time I have a diet slip up.
