Last night and tonight I ate several teaspoons of coconut oil, just before bed, in an effort to fight off a certain lipid-coated virus. Last night I got maybe 4 hours of sleep, and I usually get 7-8 no problem. Tonight, same thing - ate a bunch of coconut oil, and now I've been laying awake for hours!
I used to get insomnia before going paleo, but this is the first time in a LONG time since I've had trouble sleeping 2 nights in a row. These last 2 nights are the first times I've eaten straight coconut oil just before bed.
Has anything like this happened to you? Any thoughts on this matter?
The MCTs inside coconut oil speed up metabolism. Maybe not what you want prior to bed :-) In larger doses they make some people nauseous. Some unfortunate folks like me happen to be allergic to coconut products, this may also be an option.
I would suggest you don't eat it right before bedtime and maybe together with a meal. And if strange reactions persist, just leave it out a few days.
I learned the hard way not to eat coconut products before bedtime! They give you a burst of energy. I had no idea why I suddenly couldn't get to sleep. I did some research and found that the culprit was the warm glass of coconut milk I was drinking before bed, thinking it would help me sleep!
Props to you for at least doing an N=2 experiment! A few more experiments and you might be able to pin it on the coconut oil. Get over whatever virus you have now, and then try a few times. If it causes you problems then, that more strongly supports the idea that the coconut oil is having some effect.
It sounds like you might, well, have a virus. That may be affecting your sleep. As far as eating coconut oil, people have tried pretty much any time and any situation, and had all possible reactions.
I also get more energy when taking cocnut oil before bed. Takes a few hours to fall asleep. I feel dumb because this is the third time I've done it-->currently regretting it. Going to start taking it in the morning.
Considering that the MCTs are used along with grassfed butter to make bulletproof coffee which dave says "will keep you satisfied with level energy for 6 hours if you need it" I think this is a likely culprit as well.
Yes- I have chronic fatigue and sleep 10 hours a night and can't wake up in the morning and now two nights in a row I have not slept b/c of taking coconut oil before bed! There is also a new article on livestrong.com explaining coconut oil activates hunger...urgh!
I discovered taking coconut oil before bed interferes with sleep. It took a few nights to realize what was causing the problem with sleeping. I love it during the day, and before workouts because of the explosion of energy it gives.
