Hey everyone,

Soon it´s gonna be summer here in Germany. That means (music) festival season! I´m planning to go to one or two Festivals, they are gonna be 2-4 days long and probably (if I´m lucky) in the middle of the summer, and we´ll sleep in tents.

So, the big question is, what to bring to eat that stays good for 3 days, even when it´s hot and the tent gets warmed up, and how to prepare best. We´ll probably gonna bring a Cooling box, a small camping stove and a small pot or something. I´m relatively Low Carb (50-100) btw!

I already have thought of

  • hard-boiled Eggs (but how long do they last?)
  • Carrots
  • something like Deli meat
  • Tuna in Cans (!)
  • maybe some greek Yoghurt, nuts, dried fruits?
  • Avocados
  • chunked Coconuts
  • Sauerkraut in bags (there´s a brand here that just contains Cabbage and Seasalt, and it lasts like, forever, nice..)
  • small salamis or something like that

Maybe you could catch squirrels and eat them. – Dave S. Apr 3 2012 at 16:14

Other festival goers? Nevermind, they're probably too sweaty... – Lyndsay May 7 2012 at 21:32

I would definitely not fast like others have suggested. I'd pack some beef jerky, canned tuna/salmon, nuts, Greek yogurt, fruit, and whatever veggies I can (celery, carrots, and cauliflower seem like they'd make it). If there's a cooler I'd pack pre cooked meat and vegetables that would make it for dinner the first night and possibly lunch the second day. The rest would probably be the aforementioned items.

I would add a large chopped salad with some paleo-friendly veggies (or even a head or two of lettuce) which you can add the tuna, eggs, salami and avocados to-- or use the lettuce to make a 'sandwich' with the deli meat, the tuna, etc. For things that don't require refrigeration, consider beef jerky, roasted seaweed, nuts, nuts and more nuts.

Psilocybe Cubensis are a tasty mushroom that goes well with "primal" and music festivals.

If you eat dairy, I would definitely take some good hard cheese & nuts. Sounds like you will need the fuel for dancing!

Sardines in water. Less messy. – Dan May 8 2012 at 15:54

I don´t think that´ll work for me when I´m dancing 6-9 hours a day, and I´ll probably drink (dry) wine also, so that´s out of the game :D – Severine Apr 3 2012 at 15:56
it wouldn't hurt to try – Anthony Pierre Apr 3 2012 at 16:36

oh, it will, when I pass out from dancing the whole day at 80° without getting micronutrients or fat or salt into my body ;) – Severine Apr 3 2012 at 17:07
if you are fat adapted, you will be just fine – Anthony Pierre May 7 2012 at 21:54
I happen to disagree with Anthony here. You need at least electrolytes... – Dan May 8 2012 at 15:54

Use Dry Ice in your coolers. It keeps things freezer cold, and when it melts it leaves nothing since it sublimates into carbon dioxide gas. I used it a few years ago at Bonnaroo and I was surprised how well it worked.

whew, haven´t tried that yet, but sounds great! – Severine Apr 3 2012 at 15:58

I think all of those are good ideas, but remember to eat the perishable items first! Hard boiled eggs, for example, will last a good while but they need to be refrigerated. As long as your cooler bag stays nice and cold the eggs (and deli meat) should be fine. Certain salamis should work well, but if they are a large part of your diet you will start to feel bloated from the excess sodium intake - drink water.

Tuna or salmon in cans or pouches is a great idea for easy protein. Another idea for protein is beef jerky - you can try making it ahead of time to save cost. You can try bringing nut butter, which is a really good source of both fat and protein (and relatively low carb). Almond and coconut are my favorites.

Dried fruit is tasty and stores well but there is a ton of sugar so if you are in the 50-100 gram range on carb intake the dried fruit will probably bust your goal.

Carrots aren't a great idea; have you considered frozen spinach or other frozen leafy vegetables? If you have a stove to heat it up it could be your best option for vegetables. It's frozen so it contributes to keeping your eggs and deli meat fresh, and spinach is typically frozen in tightly pressed blocks so it will be space efficient.

thanks, some great ideas here, especially the frozen veggies. Why do you think Carrots aren´t a great idea? They do stay good for a long time.. – Severine Apr 3 2012 at 15:57
Carrots are great. I love them, but they have a lot of sugar (their sweetness is what makes them so great!) and I think they require refrigeration. They're a fine choice, but frozen spinach or broccoli have less carbs and contribute to keeping your other food cold. – Sam Apr 3 2012 at 16:09

Honestly, if you are dancing 6-8 hours a day, extra carbs will come in handy & you won't even notice them because you will burn them off so quickly. Carrots don't need refrigeration, by the way. – Dragonfly Apr 3 2012 at 16:27
I thought of that, too. I´ll move A LOT more than usually, so I think a few carbs won´t be the stupidest idea.. – Severine Apr 3 2012 at 17:05
Good to know about the carrots and refrigeration.. but you don't them to dance. There are a lot of distance/endurance athletes that perform fine in ketosis. – Sam Apr 3 2012 at 20:37
