My fasting glucose reading this morning was 6.0mmol/L (108mg)

15 minutes after a banana bread muffin (ingredients include coconut flour, egg, banana and date paste) it was 6.4mmol/L (115mg)

One and a half hours after my meal it is 5.6 mmol/L (100.901)

Surely this doesn't make any sense? Or does it?

Have I messed up readings or is my glucometer absolutely rubbish? After eating the banana bread I would have thought it would have gone up much more. I know 15 minutes isn't always accurate so I took another one one hour and a half afterwards and it was lower. Surely not?

FYI I am using the One Touch Ultra.

Same thing happened to me the other day. I ate about 150 worth of carbs from white rice, sweet potato and berries in one meal, and my one hour glucose was 104mg. I would think it would be higher. – ROB Apr 4 2012 at 17:02

Even if you eat a pound of pure sugar, if you aren't diabetic then your blood sugar shouldn't go way out of whack. Post meal reading for healthy individuals vary a great deal. My bgl never goes over 7 or so no matter what I eat or when I measure it.

It's quite possible as well that at 1.5 hours post muffin, you missed the spike and were already on the downtrend from those dates.

Your glucometer is probably fine, but use the test liquids just to be sure. Make sure if you are cleaning your finger with an alcohol wipe before you test, you allow the alcohol at least 30 full seconds to dry completely or the sugar in it can mess up your test results.

I didn't clean with alcohol and I did not get the test liquids in my pack as they come separately. Will order them along with extra strips and try again. Thanks – MrsD Apr 4 2012 at 13:57

15 minutes isn't enough time for it to go up much and it didn't. That one is ok.

If the muffin is all you had, 1 1/2 hours is plenty time to go back down. That's ok too.

The fasting number is prediabetic, but that may just be where you are right now.

oh shit. Why would I be prediabetic. Should I be worried?? – MrsD Apr 5 2012 at 16:36

My fasting blood sugar has run in the 103-105 range for years but my postprandial levels are fine which is the more important indicator . This is not uncommon in those that are low carb and is generally referred to as physiological insulin resistance - http://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com/2007/10/physiological-insulin-resistance.html

I don't know if you are low carb or not especially since divulging banana bread muffins.
