OK. So I'm on week 3 of the Paleo lifestyle. I'm doing my best to remove all carbs or at least limit them to 25g/day. Due to my schedule, I sometimes eat some protein bars that have a lil carbs.

Lately I'm in the withdrawal phase. Wanting, craving, needing sugar. Seems to happen in the AM mostly??? I Need some suggestions on what I could substitute to meet my sugar cravings that is Paleo-friendly??

For some strange reason it's been a crazy craving for Peanut Butter and chocolate.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I wouldn't focus at all on reducing carbs at this stage. I think it's actually best to have moderate carbs initially, then think about reducing them once you've adapted to Paleo eating.

I'd recommend getting a good amount of carbs from sweet potatoes, pumpkins and yams with your meals. This should help considerably with your cravings.

What do you normally eat for breakfast? I would try to start your day off with a big portion of fatty meat. This will really help curb the sugar craving. Hang in there. It gets easier!

I'm usually eating a good helping of bacon, sausage and eggs prepared differently daily. Thanks for the tip!! – sean.dent Apr 5 2012 at 13:58
careful on the sausages. a lot of common ones can have wheat/gluten! – mzrdnan Apr 5 2012 at 15:03

Totally agree with JeezLouise. Try cooking some bacon in the evening so it's ready for you in the morning - it'll satiate your cravings. When we crave sugar, our bodies are actually telling us we need more saturated fat in our diet. I also recommend coconut butter and dipping some celery or fennel in it to satiate the sugar cravings.

I actually have bacon every morning... LOL. Although I've chosen turkey bacon as a substitute for taste and $$ Coconut butter... hmm. Thanks! – sean.dent Apr 6 2012 at 0:14

some of us seem to run better without eliminating all carbs. i obsessed over macros at first, but i struggled horribly emotionally and with food prep. now, i eat multiple servings of fruit, veggies, and often rice/potatoes. this keeps me feeling normal/not craving. do what works for you!
