I have not been very consistently paleo for some time now, as I was in a hospital setting where they regulated all meals (and none of it was paleo. Oh, the grains), and I've noticed that my belly, when I lean over, hangs down, and rounds out as if I were carrying a basketball inside! I'm not sure whether this is bloating, fat, or lack of muscle? When I stand up straight, I have a reasonably streamlined figure from the side. It's just when I lean down. It's extremely embarrassing, but I'm not sure if it's because of my recent lack of healthy, grain free meal choices, or my needing to work those muscles more, or lose a bit of extra fat. Please, any advice on this would be appreciated!

Hi, Kenzie! If you've been in the hospital, don't try to do too much too fast.

Just eat healthy, whole foods and move around as much as you can. Obviously as your strength and energy return you'll be able to begin--gently!--to exercise. As you exercise, your muscles will naturally become firmer. But eating healthy is an important first step and giving your body a chance to recover is another.

I must say, though, that you should realize that the human body is not like a plastic mannequin--as we bend, etc., we do change shape and it's perfectly natural to have curves. If you have a meal in your belly and you bend over, yes you will see more roundness than when you first get up in the morning. Even if you haven't eaten, when you're curled up your internal organs need to move out a bit more than when you're standing up straight. It's very likely that you have a perfectly normal profile, but if you have some excess fat get healthy first and then worry about slowly and gently shedding your excess.

Consult with family and friends or your preferred coach/counselor. I think you need in-person support to make sure you're not seeing yourself as fatter than you really are.
