How would you do paleo/primal hitchhiking?
I'm thinking about going hitchhiking for about 6 days. I live in the Netherlands and I'm not sure about my destination yet. Maybe I'll just leave and see where I'll end up.
I read http://www.marksdailyapple.com/eating-healthy-food-travel for inspiration
Requirements:
- high energy density foods (keep the weight down)
- mostly fat/protein instead of carbs (keep the weight down, more ketogenic so I need less)
- no cooling needed
- little or no preparing time (at home and on the road)
- has to be available in the Netherlands if I bring it from home
- has to be easily findable at gas stations/truck stops/super markets in Europe
- I don't own a dehydrator and my oven can only be set for 90 minutes
Ideas for food to bring from home :
- eggs (24 cooked eggs for first 24 hours)
- macadamias (1 kg for 6 days means 167 grams per day)
- a variety of canned fish in olive oil: sardines, salmon, mackarel, maybe tuna, maybe herring. my main source for fat and protein after I have run out of eggs. buy new at supermarkets in cities
- maybe some olives
- maybe a few dried sausages
- maybe some sort of primal trail mix based on macadamias, coconut oil, honey, seasalt, sunflower seeds. see http://www.marksdailyapple.com/sweet-and-salty-primal-trail-mix/ for inspiration
- vitamin D - regular supplement
- magnesium - regular supplement
- multivitamin - to compensate for the less than optimal food
- paleo jerky is not an option (can't find it local and don't want to make it)
Ideas for food to buy on the road (gas stations/truck stops):
- fruit and greens (such as apples and carrots)
- cleanest salads and greens+meat I can find at restaurants/truck stops (no bread, ask for olive oil)
- buy a salad to go without any dressing and add my own canned fish
Other random ideas:
- I can fast for 24 hours if needed
- eat a big meat based breakfast before leaving
- buy a klean kanteen bottle and bring bone broth in it. refill with water on the road.
- bring a spoon
