I was just listening to some Peatarian podcasts and heard a caller question about fructose : he said he improved his digestion a lot by eating pure fructose, and it made him tolerate all kinds of carbs like orange juice and soda.

Now I've experienced a similar thing : since eating a crapton of fruit I don't have bloating anymore. I didn't eliminate any food, just started to eat way more fruit.

Did anyone notice the same thing, and is there an explanation for this?

Not I. Basically cutting fruit out of my diet has been the best thing I've done for my digestion in a long time. Isn't it interesting how different we all are?

out of interest HA, were all fruits problematic for you, or just certain types – daz Apr 6 2012 at 22:50

Definitely apples, pears, applesauce were a nightmare. Then cherries and dates went on the chopping block (sad). I thought grapefruits were ok, but now they're out too. I had berries tonight, and so far, so good, but we'll see. It's still a work in progress. I love fruit, it's a bummer, but having more energy/less tummy trouble is worth it. – HA Apr 7 2012 at 5:23

I am so far from an expert, but here are some theories...

Maybe the bioavailablity of minerals and vitamins in the fruit/fruit juice has improved your digestive health. (Like magnesium, potassium, vitamin c...)

Maybe the added acid has helped your digestion.

Maybe the fructose/higher sugar levels helped you liver (if we are going with peat theory) and you are functioning better, so digesting better.

Oh absolutely. Fruit has done some amazing things to my digestion. The improvement has been pretty dramatic.

I've been doing strict paleo for 2 1/2 weeks. Limited fruit. Just began bloating 4 days ago and do have 100% cut fruit but with no improvement. I wonder if I need the OPPOSITE! MORE fruit! But I am frightened to try because I can't wait to lose more weight! Did you gain at all?? – Mia Jul 11 at 18:21
I lost weight when I added fruit, but then massively gained when I added starches. So I'm eliminating the starches again and I already feel tons better. For me, fruit seems a far, far better way to up my carbs. – A at Grain Free Diet Jul 11 at 18:53

Hi, Korion! As you probably know, I'm a champion of including fruit in the overall mix of foods.

I definitely had a bloating problem on SAD with or without fruit. On whole foods, I still have mild-to-medium bloating if I hit starches such as rice/sweet potato too hard.

Fruit, on the other hand, gives me no bloating at all. The only thing that's made me wary of massive quantities is blood glucose spikes--if I eat a lot of pineapple, say half of a whole one, I'll have a sharp bg spike above 140 at one hour. By 2 hours I am back to 100 or lower, but recent info seems to indicate the brief peak above 140 is bad so I've been mixing fruit with dairy or eating it with meat and vegetables to moderate the spikes.

If I weren't checking my bg, I'd be swearing I never felt better than I do when eating tons of fruit. But ...

Hmm, maybe I should invest in a glucose meter to be sure. I eat every fruit meal with gelatin though, so I don't think I'll have these spikes. Thanks! – Korion Apr 6 2012 at 17:48
And I plan to test again soon, as I currently eat more carbs daily and the post-pineapple effect may be gone. :-)) – Nance Apr 6 2012 at 18:16
your dairy and fruit comment reminded me of eating cream over fruit as a kid....yum – daz Apr 6 2012 at 22:47

I eat 100% paleo but some days I down fruit like i'm a fruitarian.. One thing i've noticed is that I never experience digestive problems after eating lots of fruit.. But upon the next morning, I take 4-5 large surprisingly easy shits then continue on my day feeling like I just shit everything awful out of me and feeling pretty good in general once the initial shock wears away. LOL I personally don't know any fruitarians or fruitarians that smoke cannabis but word of warning here, the combination wasn't meant to be.
