I've looked at past Q&A on this and many discussions centered around Whey. I like Mark Sisson's answer eat a steak! I want to try to avoid whey powders and stuff to go with real food. I've looked up Robb Wolf's podcast and most of the time he ends up with yams and sweet potatoes for after.
Now I could eat a 1/2 can of sardines each time one hour before and after I workout, my cat would love my breath (I used to have a cat and she'd go nuts around sardines). So I know I want proteins before and after, very low fat for the month of october (tell you why in a sec) so almond butter may be good, but how much?, and low carb for after for the glycogen replenishing. Oh yes, I'm also a good consumer of coconut oil and coconut milk if this can help! And fruits are not allowed, at least in the first 4 weeks.... Oh, and I forgot chocolate....85%!
As you may know for the month of October I am doing a personal challenge (but you may join in!)(or just tag along to encourage me and see the transformation) of going full paleo, no grains, beans or dairy, while applying the TNT exercise routine. I'm actually starting next monday, 3 days a week. You can get all the information on the facebook page I created for this (again I have nothing to sell or to gain, just the pleasure of sharing knowledge!) here's the link: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Make-October-the-30-Days-for-your-Health-Paleo-Challenge-Month/128012517249982
So in one phrase the question: What is your preferred homemade paleo protein pre and post-workout choice?
(PS : I check the square to be notified of answers but don't get the emails????)
Post-wod our trainers have us eat a sweet potato and have a grilled chicken breast. I just cook them ahead of time- put it in a ziploc baggie- bring it with me and I'm set for my post-wod finger food (literally finish the wod and eat there at the box).
Agree with the steak, but I wouldn't rush into eating immediately after training in this mistaken "eating window" nonsense. After training the body is surging with HGH but eating pretty much kills production. I prefer to keep this going for an hour or two. The body takes a long time to break down and reabsorb the muscle fiber you damaged during training and won't start rebuilding for up to several days so there's no rush. Having said that I do prefer to have some BCAA/EAA before during and after tho.
I work out fasted as well following the leangains guide by Martin Berkhan. Well, not completely fasted - I take 10g of BCAAs 5-10 minutes before workout. Post workout, 10g of BCAAs, followed by my biggest meal of the deal which is usually sweet potatoes and chicken topped with fresh salsa. I fast 16-18hrs every single day. If my last bite was at 8pm, my next bite is at 12pm the next day. 3 workouts a week, walk for 40 minutes the other days.
When I work out fasted, sometimes I lack the energy, and last time I felt fine during the workout but then got dizzy just following. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet.
Also, I take a raw milk grass fed whey protein concentrate right afterward (like within 20 minutes). Normally I don't really feel like eating steak right afterward but I suppose maybe 2 hours or so later would be fine.
There's so many different theories about how to effectively gain muscle. I'm beginning to think that lots of methods will work. Otherwise, if it was really so complicated, there would be far fewer people having success getting ripped.
