I started eating about 75% Paleo close to two years ago and never had any issues. This past holiday season I let myself cheat a little more than usual and now that I am back on strict Paleo (about 4 months now) I am experiencing horrible bloating. It looks like I have a baby in my intestines about 4 days of the week. I've kept a food journal to try and pinpoint what is causing it but I cannot find anything. HELP!! So frustrating...

Can you share your food journal (at least a sample day) and let us know what being 75% Paleo means to you? How much water are you drinking, and how much sleep do you get? What about exercise? – Jen Apr 7 2012 at 17:12
food journal would help, now are you 100% strict or still 75%? are you bloated with gas or any other symptoms? – Kelly Apr 7 2012 at 18:33
I agree with Kelly, 75% adherence means that a quarter of the food going in to your body isn't ideal. Have you tried to do 100% for a month and seeing what happens? – CoachCanadan Apr 7 2012 at 19:57

research FODMAPs. There are lots of questions on here about it. paleohacks.com/questions/tagged/fodmaps – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Apr 7 2012 at 22:50

seems like you are eating too complicated of foods and too weird of combinations...meats and nuts would kill me, espeically deli meats or sausages. boiled eggs are super bloating too, sunny side up or just the yolk is better. perhaps focusing on cleaner meats and no nuts or nuts as a monomeal/snack – jessica May 13 2012 at 18:58

For those of you that responded, thanks!

I went and got blood work done and got an abdominal scan and the results all came back clear. I resorted back to my food journal to solve this problem.

I have completed eliminated EGGS from my diet and I feel great! I am on a daily probiotic (Mark Sisson) and I have not experienced the bloating.

Spoke with a doctor about the egg issue and he suggested that I experienced an allergic reaction.

Lesson learned...listen to your body!

Hmm, Ian having the same problem with bloating. I've been eating eggs every morning! I'll cut them out completely and see. How long have you been egg and bloating free now?? – Mia Jul 11 at 18:10

Could be fructose intolerance. There's a lot of paleo foods that could be triggering it ( most fruits except bananas, coconut and tomatos all have fructose)and that could be why you can't pinpoint one thing. I have a friend that is fructose intolerant and she bloates to the point of looking pregnant as well.

Is this something that you can form over time? I've eaten fruit my whole life and never had this reaction until January of this year. I'm turning 25 this year so maybe my body is changing? – Lindsay Apr 8 2012 at 20:06

Agree with Melissa.

If you have been exposing yourself to gluten repeatedly, then it's likely that your gut flora is messed up and you have developed FODMAPS intolerance.

I eat closer to 90% Paleo now. Here is one day of my food journal that I marked down feeling super bloated that evening: Applegate turkey sausage & black tea for breakfast. Walnut/Macadamia nut mix snack Chicken deli meat & paleo meatballs, boiled egg, guacamole, and raw veggies for lunch. Spoon of almond butter and a few carrots for snack. Green salad, 2 cucumber wrapped sushi rolls (no rice), and red wine for dinner. I own a fitness studio and workout at least 2 times a day (crossfit and then instructing a group fitness class) so I find myself hungry quite often.

Avocados absolutely kill me.

I highly recommend going Terry Wahls. I know, it sounds very restrictive, but it might really help. Try it for three days - I saw the difference in one day.

And avoiding all fruit if you need too. Also, have you tried probiotics? They might help or might cause intestinal distress - it is different for everyone.

My gut feeling - you have been doing Paleo 75%, but you might be gluten intolerant 100%. The issue can be gluten intolerance and Terry Wahls diet will take care of it.

Good luck, don't give up!

Can you describe the Terry Wahls diet? – Lindsay Apr 8 2012 at 21:25
Isn't she the 9 cups of veggies a day lady? I'm impressed by her MS recovery, but I don't see how that applies here. My belly looks like a balloon with even half that much vegetable matter. – Happy Now Apr 9 2012 at 6:05
Yes, she is. I believe your problem has something to do with being gluten intolerant. Her way (3 cups of green leafy, 3 cups of sulfur rich, 3 cups of colored plus mushrooms will build up your immunity thus alleviate the problem. TRY IT! - I SWEAR BY IT! (no nuts for me though) – VB Apr 9 2012 at 6:41
