I'm allergic to dairy, and eggs. What can I use for quick protein shakes and still remain Paleo?

Thank you for your suggestions. I have been gluten, soy and dairy (allergic to casein) sensitive, and shell fish allergic for 20yrs. I do not eat any grains and hardly any fish. Since I have been so restrictive in my eating, I am now having allergy symptoms to eggs and nuts. I am trying to rotate my protein sources more. That's why I was asking about the shakes. Oh, I forgot...I also don't eat any fruit as I'm pre-diabetic and having trouble keeping my blood sugars under 100. – Sandy Apr 8 2012 at 20:38

How about a nut butter such as almond or cashew? I use cashew butter in my smoothies - it's delicious. Mark Sisson mentions Almond butter in his Top 10 protein sources - http://www.marksdailyapple.com/top-ten-protein-sources.

Also if it's lactose intolerance that is the problem you might want to take a look into Kefir milk: http://www.webmd.com/allergies/news/20030530/kefir-helps-lactose-intolerance. It makes great smoothies and supposedly is very good for your gut health. (I say 'supposedly' because I have no medical literature to back this up with).

Why bother with a smoothie and not just eat some protein?

Because you wouldnt get the placebo effect! ;) – Warren D Apr 8 2012 at 9:56

All joking aside, try a hazelnut butter, banana and bacon combo, and add cinnamon. Water to thin it out, or almond milk.

That said, maybe you should skip the shakes and make yourself some nut butter protein bars? You can also eat jerky, or tinned fish.

that sounds delicious... I'm going to try it when I get a chance! – Rene Apr 8 2012 at 18:57
Jen, how much hazelnut butter / bacon are you combining with a banana? – Rene Apr 8 2012 at 18:58

I've seen people here that use gelatin, but I'm not an expert on the completeness of the protein or anything.

Are you allergic to dairy or just lactose intolerant? Even lactose intolerant people should be fine with whey isolate. Or take lactase. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/whey-isolate-concentrate-hydrolysate/

That's not necessarily true... I can't do dairy or any derivatives in any form:( – Jen Apr 8 2012 at 17:32

PaleoMeal makes a rice protein derived thing. No dairy (no whey), no soy (hurray). I recommend the berry flavor, the plain (maybe it's vanilla) is dreadful. I toss it in with cucumber and half a granny smith apple, some kale and coconut milk. http://www.amazon.com/Designs-For-Health-PaleoMeal-DF-Berry/dp/B000SUWJO2

There is a plant based protein powder by Nutrilite available from Amway distributors. It is a mix of soy, wheat and pea protein.
