Everyone I know has been recommending that I go to the St. Pete downtown farmers market on Saturday mornings because of my constant babbling about grass-fed this, pastured that.
Any other Bay Area Paleos checked out the market in St. Pete? Any particular farm/booth I should check out for pastured eggs and local produce?
The meat quy is real expensive. $7 /lb for groung beef. Knows nothing about offal. I think he sells the "stuff" for his brother.I find them very "weak" (Paleo-wise). The dairy/egg woman is more "sincere" (paleo-wise). The dairy is pricey, but RAW!. The eggs are well priced and excellent. The organic veggie people are excellent. Cheap and great quality. So a mixed bag. The rest of the farmers market is total crap.A total sugar-gluten-industrial oil- circus. It would be like eating at a RAYS game! Send me an e-mail a firstname.lastname@example.org I'll meet you there! Any other Tampa Bay people? I started a Paleo meetup group. As as now, pretty half assed on my part! No meetings yet. Soon!
It's not worth the drive if you're just going for fresh veggies. There's one or two vendors who sell produce which you could probably buy at Publix for the same price. One meat person who, as shah mentioned, is expensive and doesn't actually have the meat on premises (you have to place an order with them).
Lots of junk food, a little French stand that makes tasty crepes to order, and a few odds and ends. Lots of hippy stuff like soaps and candles and aromatherapy.
Isn't there a big warehouse in Tampa who sells produce both wholesale and to the general public?
EDIT: Josh, it looks like St. Pete is prepping for the upcoming Grand Prix race through downtown, so I'm not sure how that will affect traffic around the area.
We are Paleo in south Tampa and interested in meeing orher paleo people in the area. We make it to the St Pete farmers market pretty often. The dancing goat sells eggs and raw milk and it's pricey but good. The meat is pricey too like mentioned above but there's more than just ground beef so that's good. It's worth a nice walk around though and there is live music. Its not really worth complaining about the "junk" foods since that's most farmers markets these days. It's definitely a better experience and similar prices to publix. Also I sell paleo meal plans to a bunch of young busy professionals in the Tampa area if you're interested you can email email@example.com
I'm a Paleo eater in S Tpa and get all my veggies, raw milk, pastured eggs, grassfed beef etc from Urban Oasis Hydroponic Farm in Carrollwood. They even sell local honey from hives on-site. I definitely urge you to check them out instead of driving to the St Pete market. Their market is open Fridays and Saturdays, although summertime hours are shortened because of the heat.
Love the market, but it is pretty limited on the selection. Most of the market is prepeared food vendors, CARBS etc LOL. Only a few veggie stands and the meat is very limited/expensive. Do love the "Dancing Goat", the lady with the raw milk and eggs-she is the only reason I go. You can find her at the Sweetwater Organic market in Tampa also on Sundays I think.
