I am 5'2" and 110 lbs. My eating this past week has been ravenous and resulted in some binges and I think it may have been because of restrictions in nuts, fruit, and starches. But, I am also wondering if my leptin is messed up again or my brain signaling is off? I get hungry after I have eaten more than enough. Then when I fast I get extremely cold. I do twenty-four hour fasts weekly, and if not I wait 16-18 hours before eating again. This weekend was bad though:

On Friday I had some leftover crockpot beef stew with veggies, an avocado, and sweet potato for lunch. But then things got messed up and I didn't end up eating dinner until around 8:30 pm which included probably a pound and a half of meat, like 1/4 a bar of 100% dark chocolate, and probably a pound of veggies sauteed in coconut oil. Maybe I am missing something in my diet?

So then I fasted for 24 hours and my dinner consisted of a huge plate of grilled octopus and olive oil, beets in olive oil, and then grilled shrimp with grilled veggies, and green beans with tomato sauce. I was still so hungry afterwards that I literally ate an ENTIRE fruit plate.

Woke up starving this morning so I had to eat an avocado as a snack. Then went to some brunch and ate another pound and half of ham, lamb, and beef tenderloin, aspharagus, carrots, beets, parsnips, and more (lots), bacon, and since I was still starving FRUIT! I went home hungry and had some 100% dark chocolate and stuffed my face with coconut flakes. Anyways this is the longest post ever, but WHAT IS GOING ON?!

I don't think you need to be fasting.

Because you are fasting, you are trying to fit your entire calorific needs for the day into a short time. Give up IF until you feel better. – Jeannine Apr 9 2012 at 9:26

Because you have a high future discount rate.

WHat exactly does that mean? – YoungPaleoLover Apr 9 2012 at 2:09
It's an economics term. It means that you um, discount the future costs of your actions. For instance, you want it now because of the present benefits without laying significant weight on the future costs. Ballerinas are the textbook example. They have a physically demanding sport, yet they have some of the highest smoking rates of any population. – foreveryoung Apr 9 2012 at 2:30

They value not eating food now and occupying their mouths with cigarettes more than they value their future physical health. Thus, they have a high future discount rate when it comes to smoking. – foreveryoung Apr 9 2012 at 2:32

So what I mean by my comment is that you value the pleasure of gorging yourself presently more than you value the negative impact this has on your future health (both emotional and physical). Thus, you have a high fure discount rate when it comes to overeating. You are discounting that fact that you are going to feel badly about yourself and are damaging your metabolism. – foreveryoung Apr 9 2012 at 2:35

Sometimes the mere thought of being on a diet and all the dangrous foods you can't have leaves one feeling overwhelmed. Try not to think of being on "the paleo diet" rather think of it as eating natural, whole, fresh and unprocessed foods. Every time you eat think of the food nourishing all parts of your being. You have to change your relationship with food and respect it. – foreveryoung Apr 9 2012 at 2:42

Is it because your body is trying to tell you that you are too thin? 110 pounds is incredibly light. What is your body fat %. Are you male or female?

I assume she's a female. At 5'2, 110 is probably fine, but yes, for you it could be below your body's "happy" weight. Is this lower than you usually are? Are you just coming off a period of weight loss? – Renee Apr 9 2012 at 1:54
I don't know, 110 at 5'2' isn't that thin, especially if she has a petite frame. You could be right though. Hard to say without more information... – JeezLoise Apr 9 2012 at 1:56
I was going to say something about "happy" weight as well. OP used to be 120 from previous questions. – Sunny Beaches Apr 9 2012 at 2:00

18% to 19% ain't high - that level is considered lean/athletic. – Sigrid Apr 9 2012 at 2:21

18-19% for the ladies is not high at all. Have a look here - bmi-calculator.net/body-fat-calculator/…. You are in the athletic range. I honestly dont think you have anything to worry about :) – peter Apr 9 2012 at 2:32

April has it right. Get into a normal eating schedule then after a couple months of that if you need to tweak, do some fasting. Fasting is a minor adjustment you play with AFTER everything else is dialed in and working.

But, what if my schedule only allows for that? I really don't have time to be eating breakfast and by the time I could eat lunch it is noon, then I have dinner around 6 or 7 so still not eating for 17 hours a day.... – YoungPaleoLover Apr 9 2012 at 2:13
Coconut milk + whey + cinnamon. Easy breakfast in 2 minutes. – Satchmo Apr 9 2012 at 2:47

Sprintas you need to make eating breakfast a priority. Pre hard boil eggs and that is all you need. – Eric Apr 9 2012 at 4:53
Well, it is your health. You should (I think) prioritize that above all else. – miked Apr 9 2012 at 14:04

You don't say if you're doing any exercising. If so, what are you doing?

It varies. Something active every day. I'm in lacrosse do that 5 days a week after school for a couple hours but not too strenuous. A couple times a week I do HIIT, lots of walking, biking, and yoga. – YoungPaleoLover Apr 9 2012 at 2:10
That is a lot of activity, no wonder you are so hungry! I had trouble with fasting and weight training, but I feel much better and my workouts have improved now that I have stopped the fasting. I am also not hungry all the time. Maybe try limiting the fasting and see how you feel. – Conn0r Apr 9 2012 at 2:54

I hope this information is helpful:

From a previous post: http://paleohacks.com/questions/46722/how-do-i-lose-weight#axzz1rUJ4ZsiT

CORTISOL AND GREHLIN:

The bad guys...

Keeping the intense portion of your workout (Start to finish) below 45 minutes should keep cortisol away. Also relaxing keeps it away. Cortisol takes away lean muscle which is bad for weight loss. Because each pound of muscle burns calories for you.

Grehlin or why did I just eat an entire bag of oreos, chips, etc.. Or even why did I eat so much Paleo approved food...

Sleep and meals reduce grehlin levels. Lack of sleep means higher grehlin levels. Grehlin levels go down when you eat. So fasting is a more advanced technique and if you are still devouring massive food after dinner than it is not time to add fasting yet.

So to beat grehlin sleep at least 7 hours (Likely you need more)... And eat a big protein breakfast, eat lunch and dinner.

Grehlin builds after each meal so go to bed early will help with the munchies and staying up late is a trigger...

Are you pregnant?
