Looks like Amazon stopped carrying the 88% (Endangered Species) chocolate bars that I was previously buying. They were only $2.40/bar using S&S. Any suggestions for what to replace them with? The supermarket sells them for $3/bar and that seems to be the cheapest option compared to anywhere online. I look for minimally processed chocolate to retain the antioxidants, low sugar (this one was 5g/.5 bar), and no dairy. I would like to be under $3 per bar including shipping. I recently tasted some Taza chocolate and it's fantastic but cheapest is about $4/bar.

I love Taza! It's not conventional chocolate (it's stone ground), which makes it handy for drinking, as well as eating. That and it's "artisan" shtick make it a little more expensive. – greymouser Apr 9 2012 at 17:20

Check out Trader Joe's. They have a variety of cheap dark chocolate bars, but we have eaten our stash, so I can't tell you about ingredients. Maybe on their website?

I'll be moving to Austin in a few months and there's no Trader Joes there unfortunately. It's a good suggestion otherwise though - thanks. – balor123 Apr 9 2012 at 19:14
It may be there soon:austin.culturemap.com/newsdetail/… – Dragonfly Apr 9 2012 at 19:56
Yeah I saw that article. It's a running joke on the city-data forums. At the soonest, I think it'd be at least a few years if ever. – balor123 Apr 10 2012 at 13:25
Bummer. I don't buy much at TF's, but the chocolate... – Dragonfly Apr 10 2012 at 14:47

If it's for eating as is, Green and Blacks can be inexpensive at big box stores or co-op sales. Dagoba and Scharffen Berger are brands I like too.

If you're cooking with it (coffee or hot chocolate) I switched over to raw cacao powder. It blends better and I end up using less so it's more economical.

I get Dagoba myself. I am satisfied with eating a tiny bit at a time, so a bar lasts me all week. Pairs well with red wine. :) I've noticed Aldi as very high % dark chocolate and it's pretty good! It's German, and I can't recall the brand. I got the 85% and it was excellent.

Dagoba is great but also expensive. Looking on Amazon, though, looks like Eclipse bars are non-Amazon prime eligible for $2.44/bar, which fits the bill. It has a bit of soy in it but that's ok. – balor123 Apr 10 2012 at 13:51

I have a Lindt outlet near my house. I can get 12 of the 90% dark bars (free of soy lecithin) for $6.

Lindt is going to be my fallback option. It's also pretty refined and often has questionable ingredients so I'd been avoiding it until now. We'll see though. – balor123 Apr 10 2012 at 13:28

I eat Ghirardelli 100% cacao baking bars from the grocery store. They're cheap because they are baking chocolate, but for that reason nobody will ever call them "fantastic." They get the job done when you need chocolate, though. Ghirardelli is the best tasting 100%, in my opinion.

I have some of it at home but it's pretty refined and doesn't have much cocoa butter in it. – balor123 Apr 10 2012 at 13:27

It looks like amazon still carries it!

Whoa, I just realized that was for 6 bars, not 10. Right? That's quite a steep price. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful – Sunny Beaches Apr 9 2012 at 22:54
Yeah still pretty expensive. It's actually not bars either, which further increases the cost. It's being sold by Nutracity on Amazon, not Amazon itself, which is probably why it's so expensive. – balor123 Apr 10 2012 at 13:26
