Are these still quality food items? I just bought a couple cans of the bumblebee whole oysters and they actually taste pretty good.

One other question though... in cooked oysters, are they usually dark green inside? I've only had oysters like once before, so I really don't know. The ones that are more plump especially, have a decent amount of this green inside. They taste and smell ok.

OK... here's the important part: Read the ingredients and check out the MEDIUM its packed in. Is it brine or some kind of oil. If its cottonseed oil, forget it. Any kind of hydrogenated veggie oil or corn oil or canola oil. Forget it. I empathize with you on this because I have always loved those little cans of party snack smoked oysters, clams, roe, anchovies and so forth. Yeah, Trader Joe's canned oysters are green inside too. They are very nutritious, but they have about 800% RDA of zinc in one can, so don't have them everyday.

The good thing about TJ's oysters (they're out of them now btw) is that they're in olive oil. All other ones I've seen are in seed oil. – Eugenia Sep 1 at 20:27
I don't trust canned foods with "olive oil" 70% of olive oil isn't even real olive oil so you can bet that cheap canned goods aren't using the real stuff. I'd get water packed only if I were you. – Aughra Sep 2 at 1:31

The green color in oysters is actually not an abnormal color. During the harvesting season, the oysters are still growing and ingest a large amount of plankton while they are still lean. This makes the "green feeds" visible through their outer skin.

I also made a call to them to ask how long they keep in the fridge : the answer is 2 days. Oysters are delicious!

I used to get bumble bee smoked oysters but i recently discovered Walmart's generic brand called Great Value and it's just as good as the name brand, AND cheaper! I eat about 3 to 4 cans a week with my salad.

Oysters are ok to kill and eat, even if you're a vegetarian or vegan because they can't feel pain.

The green is the guts, they give that oyster oomph to the flavour. I love oysters as a source of zinc and iron, have them once or twice a week to get plenty o' minerals. I like plain canned oysters as a nice stew and smoked oysters as wrapped in bacon. When I make sardine paddies, I usually throw a few chopped up oysters in there for extra flavour.

I love oysters. I guess the only thing I'd be concerned about is BPA-lining.

Crown Prince has BPA-free cans. The things are delicious, the oysters improved my skin on my hands and face, improved my body temperature and my sleep. I ate 3 cans already :). – Korion Apr 10 2012 at 7:45

We eat the Trader Joe's oysters several times a week. We like TJ's because their cans are BPA free.

Most of the oysters I eat are bottled uncooked in brine. Goose Point yearlings are the best.
