So, when I was in the hospital, they did basic testing and said numerous times that they had found ketones, and it made me think back to what I had eating before I went into the hospital. But I became confused, because the few days before I had gone, I'd been eating pretty high carb (100-150 ish) from fruits and vegetables... I know all bodies are unique, but isn't this kind of high to be burning through ketones? Any ideas why that'd be happening?

High carb would be more like 300+ grams. 200 grams only barely gives enough energy to the brain with no need for ketones or gluconeogenesis. 100-150 would probably raise ketone levels somewhat, although not as high as going below 50g CHO. Also, if your protein is a bit on the low side, more ketones would probably be generated (as opposed to getting the extra glucose from protein). – Dave S. Apr 11 2012 at 13:05

Maybe you ate coconut oil before? The MCTs are directly converted to ketones inside the liver.

Also, ketosis has no on/off switch, even on moderate-carb days some of them will still be detectable.

I don't think so... I didn't get to buy coconut oil for a while, and didn't have the chance until AFTER I came home. Hmmm. Thank you for the answer, though! – McKenzie Apr 11 2012 at 11:31

Ketosis should rather be called ketoadaption. Since you're ketoadapted, your boddy will use a certain amount of ketones as fuel. (the more carbs you eat, the less ketones) but ketones are not completely switched off. Plus, 100-150grams of carbs wont fully cover the required energy, this gap needs to be filled. Another idea is that if you've been VLC the days before, some of the carbs were converted into muscle-glycogen and got "lost" for the rest of your body. – Thomy Apr 11 2012 at 11:52
