I've been trying to eat paleo the best I can for about two months now. I have to admit I have the occasional slip up here and there on the weekends, but it's nothing that crazy. Once I get back on track I notice I lose a few pounds, between 3-5 in the first few weeks and then it just stops and it's very discouraging. I'm a tall girl at 5'10 and 160lbs. I'd ideally like to get down to 145lbs and be able to maintain that, fluctuating naturally a few pounds here and there. I'm a size 8/9 jean now and the number on the scale doesn't really matter as much to me as being able to comfortably fit into my old size 6 jeans again! I work out a few times a week with high intensity strength training for no more than 15-30 minutes and am starting to walk more regularly now. I've never been one to lose weight quickly anyway, but I just feel I stop after the 5lbs and I get stuck. Anything else I can do to kick it up without feeling like I have to cut so much out of my diet? I just don't want to feel like there's nothing I can eat.

You may want to give us an idea of how carby your diet is, what "High Intensity strength training" means to you, what walking "regularly means" etc... If you are eating 90% starch and fruit, almost no meat and no added fat Vs. high meat, near ketogenic diet makes a difference. Also, High intensity can mean crossfit or it can mean 1 rep, 3 sets, 90% 1rm. So.... – Satchmo Apr 12 2012 at 19:18
I don't eat pasta, bread, grains or really anything that starchy. I work out 3-4 times a week with a personal trainer who teaches crossfit classes, but I have not been to a class yet, she's training me one on one first. (it's been about 2 months) We do lots of squats, push ups, planks, kettelbells, lunges, short terms sprints all within a half hour training session. The days I'm not with her I'll do a 12 minute interval run of fast for 20, rest for 10. I never thought 12 minutes could feel so long either! I walk about a half hour-an hour a few times a week. – donna Apr 12 2012 at 19:33
Hey Donna, don't mean to push it about your diet but can you provide more detail about what you do eat? What does your average day look like? – Marcy Apr 12 2012 at 19:37

Hi Donna, I don't speak from experience, but from what I've read on here, people say to watch the nuts if you're struggling with weight loss. They pack a big caloric punch in a deceivingly small package. – Renee Apr 12 2012 at 20:42

Are you sure it is fat and not muscle that you have? I noticed a big change in my body when I lost fat but gained muscle. There was no difference on the scale, my pants were actually tighter, but I LOOKED better and felt better. It was hard to tell at first, but when I flex my thighs I can feel that the added girth is mostly bad-ass muscle. From your routine and protein intake, I am wondering if you aren't building some wonderful muscles yourself! – Marcy Apr 12 2012 at 22:09

Oh that big fruit smoothie is prob killing yor weight loss effort ?!! I would drop the fruit in favor for non dairy protein. The rest of your day is good if then you are still hungry and needing the fruit carbs because of your workouts then add it back in.I do heavy weights and some interval training on less than 20 carbs a day with ease.

The nuts also have a lot of cals I would drop them to once or twice a week.

I know everyone on here hates protein shakes but I find them very useful for weight loss as its protein without the fat and it's make it easy to get your 100 gms of protein a day without the high cal and fat count you need to watch to lose the weight.

+1 - don't ever drink your calories, that stalls weightloss like nothing else. – miked Apr 12 2012 at 22:58

Eat less food. Whatever you are doing now via diet is maintaining your current weight. Eat less, and you will see results.

Calorie count if you have to, but you must train your body to consume less.

You are not alone. I'm in a very similar situation myself (although at 5'8" 170 your stats are enviable to me). The last 15-20 lbs are very stubborn, esp for women and more so past 35 or so. I've read all the threads on this site relating to women and weight, and come to the conclusion that I should try a whole 30. Others have said they have to be extremely strict, no dairy, no chocolate, no nuts, very limited fruit. All I know is 80/20 ain't cutting it anymore for me. Guess I'll try the experiment for a month and report back.

Sometimes only time and patience is needed to see results, but it is hard to know whether there is anything you could do to help you achieve your goals more quickly in a healthy way without having the full picture.

Do you sleep enough? Are you managing your stress well? Do you have any health issues that could be getting in the way? Any digestion problems that could trigger inflammation?

Maybe working with a qualified Paleo dietitian could help you make some sense of it all.

Thanks for all of your feedback. I usually get between 7-9 hours of sleep a night. I have normal everyday work stress like most, but nothing out of the ordinary or crazy. Also, no health issues. I will definitely try to cut back on the fruit and nuts as I feel those are the high calorie things stopping my weight loss. Thank you again. – donna Apr 19 2012 at 14:47

Maybe your body is at its natural weight. According to the BMI scale you are at a normal weight (BMI 23) and not overweight at all.
