I'm not talking about "celebrities of paleo" (Dr. Harris, Robb Wolf, Cordain, Sisson, plus many wonderful paleo bloggers, etc.) - I'm talking about famous people who have made the switch to paleo and turned out the better for it. I saw actor Josh Duhamel was wearing Vibrams and had to wonder if maybe he's jumping on the paleo bandwagon (not that all people wearing Vibrams are automatically paleo, but y'know...).

So are there any celebrities out there known for something other than the paleo lifestyle in and of itself? Athletes, musicians/singers, actors/actresses?

I guess the reason I ask is I've heard so much about celebrities going vegan recently, and the next time that comes up in conversation it would be fun to say, "Yea, though did you hear that [insert cool celebrity here] decided to go paleo last year?"

Could be a good entrypoint/icebreaker too for when you have those elevator conversations when someone casually asks about your weight loss or other improved symptoms. "Did you realize so-and-so is also paleo?"

Celebrity endorsements are not necessarily a plus IMO. So many celebrities do this or that fad diet. Grapefruit diets, raw diets, vegan, whatever. – JJ Sep 27 2010 at 17:36

Hence "good" example - not just doing paleo for a role, or to get back to a bikini after bearing twins, only to revert to Neolithic ways. I mean any celebrities known to be truly dedicated to the way of eating or even the lifestyle in its entirety. – familygrokumentarian Sep 27 2010 at 18:01

Brief thread at MDA: marksdailyapple.com/forum/… Good point about Gabrielle Reece: she has a blurb on the back of The Primal Blueprint after all. – Paul Sep 27 2010 at 20:14
Ray Mears for one and perhaps also Chris Evans. – Paleo Works Sep 21 2011 at 11:58
Quite an old question now, things change! Which celebrities are currently known to be Paleo or close to it? – Suz - Paleo Oz Apr 12 2012 at 4:13

Semi paleo: Angelina Jolie

Semi-paleo, G-free athletes: --Apolo Ohno, 4X Olympic multiple-medalist Speedskater (NYT: coconut oil, eggs, low carb, appears grain-free (except rice prior to events)) --Christian Vande Velde, Tour de France (MH: Winning Without Wheat) --Beijing Olympic gluten-free foraging, runner Amy Yoder Begley

In reference to Bill Clinton, apparently he doesn't eat any meat either: "I did all this research, and I saw that 82 percent of the people since 1986 who have gone on a plant-base, no dairy, no meat of any kind, no chicken, no turkey—I eat very little fish, once in a while I'll have a little fish—If you can do it, 82 percent of people have begun to heal themselves." nowpublic.com/health/… – Marisa Sep 28 2010 at 2:14
Yeah Clinton is 'Ornish' I read as well somewhere. He doesn't appear that great to me -- sarcopenic, not as robusty... Ornish had cancer and horrible depression (obviously inflammation, though clear coronary arteries, so what). Why would anyone follow Ornish?? – grace Sep 29 2010 at 1:19
The best part about that Apolo Ohno blurb is when they refer to the fuel of his diet as "lean fat." Pardon me but WTF IS THAT. – gone2croatan Feb 2 2011 at 20:11
cynarin - they use that "lean fat" to make the "fat-free" whipping cream I saw the other day ;p – JCB Feb 2 2011 at 20:53

WHAT?! I don't understand how Megan Fox isn't a good role model, she is SUPER hot! The people who say she is too skinny are (usually) jealous females, like the people who are rude to me "you wanna eat dontcha" are usually overweight female family members, I could eat them under the table, I just don't stuff my face with sugar, sorry.....rant over :D – Carly Feb 3 2011 at 9:11

on the jason statham workout portion of men's health a couple years back, his short description of his diet definitely seemed paleo...

"1. No refined sugar or flour at all, ever. Bread and pasta are out, as are sweets of any kind. No fruit juices. No booze. "That's the hardest part right there," he says. His dessert every night is plain yogurt with fresh fruit...

  1. Spread out the calories. Statham has six small meals daily. The foods aren't surprising -- egg whites, vegetables, lean meats, fish, nuts, and protein shakes. But the 2,000-calorie limit is gospel."

I was standing next to Jeremy Piven today at Whole Foods and he didn't buy anything without first asking the guy behind the counter if it was gluten free. At least one step in the right direction...he got the tofu chicken curry :-(

Ooo! Personal anecdote. Nice. The followup: how much mercury laden fish was he buying? :) (He once claimed fish-caused mercury poisoning was a reason for his not meeting contractual obligations, if memory serves me.) – familygrokumentarian Sep 28 2010 at 11:52

So that kinda stuff just.. like.. happens in LA? For some reason I still imagine celebrities as having a magical aura, or at least a permanent entourage. And yeah, I remember he left a play early or something because of mercury poisoning, from too much sushi. If it wasn't true, he definitely gave a great performance. – Jayan Jan 26 2011 at 8:19
From what I've read it sounded true. He had a serious reaction. – patrick3000 Mar 4 2011 at 6:49

Nassim Taleb is probably the most famous...

Drew Carey did no-carb which was probably pretty paleo.

Thought I'd reactivate this thread to share some exciting news: big name mainstream blogger Heather Armstrong of the Dooce.com empire declared on her blog today that she has gone Paleo and feels awesome!

Wherein I go a Touch More Insane

Dooce has been one of my favorite blogs for yeeeaaars and it was so exciting to see these two hemispheres collide. I predict a small spike in Paleo interest over the next few days or weeks.

From everything I have read the vast majority of younger, slender-to-thin celebrity women and cut celeb men claim to follow a lower-fat, low-cal version of a paleo diet, if they are not vegan (ish). Lots of fresh fruits and veg, meat, fish, nuts, strictly limited carbs. Many are gluten-free. Coconut oil (saturated fat!!!) is even a big thing. But never do they call it 'paleo'.

Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie are both naturally gorgeous, slender women who have largely ruined their looks with extreme weight loss and premature plastic surgery. They still manage to look pretty good despite it all, but it's a crying shame.

Something I read a while back. The diet is paleo (except for the potatos), but the situation is pretty extreme (so not good for a paleo example). He was cutting up for a movie, so he had a big incentive to stay on the diet, plus he was doing boatloads of physical work. The guy looked rock solid for the movie, but he indicated he'd be running back to his bad diet after the movie.

"He forewent his rice and ate only skinless chicken breast, raw fish, potatoes and salad. He prepared the meal himself during off days. If he wanted spice, he would add some black pepper. Once in a while, he got to eat beef cooked in plain boiling water which he would have appreciated it very much as if he has won a lottery."

Kobe Bryant defies father time eating Paleo (While Ashton Kutcher ends up in the hospital ignoring it).

Two very different celebrity diets are in the news this week.

On the one hand is the story of Ashton Kutcher who ended up in the hospital with pancreas issues and severe pain following a fruitarian diet which was part of his efforts to “get into character” for his role as Steve Jobs in the soon to be released movie Jobs. Steve Jobs, the visionary founder of Apple and a known fruitarian, died in October 2011 from complications of pancreatic cancer.

On the other hand is the amazing story of LA Lakers guard Kobe Bryant who is turning back the clock following a Traditional Diet all the while looking, feeling and playing better than ever at an age that most would consider to be way past his prime.

Check out the full story here: http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/kobe-bryant-defies-father-time-using-traditional-diet-while-ashton-kutcher-ends-up-in-the-hospital-ignoring-it/

This is a good one for teenage boys!

I seem to remember reading somewhere that her 'cheat' was chocolate.

well, pardon me, but Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie are the two most repulsive looking actresses i have ever seen. i'm not flaming the paleo diet but if these two ladies are the iconic endorsements of paleo then it sends a pretty bad message. anyone agree?

edit: i'm male and straight. of course they're hot, but they aren't natural - they're scarecrow looking (their hands make me want to belch). and megan fox is an airhead - i definitely wouldn't trust her. does the fact that i'm getting such a response from everyone (besides the fact that i'm totally upsetting the hivemind) mean that people here genuinely think these actresses are to be admired and seen as role models? i probably crossed the line here but SURELY I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THIS?

Megan fox repulsive are you mad??!! She's GORGEOUS!!! I would and I'm straight. I'm sure if mos guys came home to find her at home they wouldn't say "er leave you're repulsive" :D – Carly Feb 2 2011 at 22:26

Saying they are repulsive is going too far, saying they aren't natural would be better. Eating this way, for me, is about getting your genes to express themselves as well as possible naturally. – oliverh Feb 3 2011 at 10:27

I would love love love to hear a paleo podcast interview with Ted Nugent. I have no idea if he shuns grains, but he is hunter extraordinaire and highly entertaining. I have heard him speak on politics in the past and feel his personal views marry nicely with a "true" paleo lifestyle.

I don't know if it was a sarcastic comment on Ray Audette for his meat eating zealotry (Author of Neanderthin) but I remember reading somewhere that Audette was the Nuge's personal dietitian. – Joshua Jan 23 2012 at 19:07

Ooh ooh, the blokes I know are all REALLY impressed when I say Forest Griffin is Paleo, that makes them sit up and take notice, although most of them seem pretty damn impressed that Megan Fox is too but the general feeling here seems to be she's not such a good role model, maybe it's a british thing but I don't personally know one male who wouldn't ;D

Hi, where did you see that Forrest Griffin is paleo? According to bsnonline.net/diet/forrest_griffin.html he eats oats for breakfast and some protein powders in between. His actual meals look more paleo, but low-fat. – Jon Thoroddsen Mar 4 2011 at 2:13

There seems to be a bit of debate about the relative merits of Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie. As has been hinted at, I personally wouldn't say no, but they would not be my first choice.

As other posters have also pointed out, celebrities are not necessarily the best people to endorse things. They are often ephemeral and change their stance to suit popular opinion (and, of course, to keep their name in the headlines).

I work for a global entertainment/media corporation and have encountered several celebrities from various fields (sports, music, TV, film). Some are the nicest people you could wish to meet (polite, take a genuine interest, happy to chat etc.), whilst many more are simply obnoxious. There is also the question of tasteless makeup and surgical 'enhancement' (not entirely convinced of the enhancing qualities in most cases).

I would rather have Wolf, Cordain, Harris, Sisson etc. as champions/figureheads, leave the celebrities to sway in the breeze to maintain self-promotion, and concentrate on the beautiful, natural, local girls who are only concerned with their health.

It makes me furious when the media gets word that celebrities are going paleo! They treat it as if they have an eating disorder. Clearly the world has been brain-washed to believe that bagels and muffins are healthy.
