Is it normal to be hungrier after having a protein shake? I have been including a protein shake or two a day into my diet by recommendation from my trainer, but I find on the days I have the protein shake that I am so much hungrier all day long. I'm having them after workouts generally speaking, but find from then on I am craving more food! I found not being hungry between meals so much more liberating!

I think I may know why this is. If it is whey protein that you are consuming, the protein elicits an insulin response. Insulin in the absence of carbs/sugar could be resulting in low blood sugar, and thus causing your body to crave food/sugar to bring it back up again.

People like to forget that proteins cause insulin responses as well, they just don't have a glycemic load like carbs do.

Oh maybe!! I have been VLC paleo and my trainer said I wasn't getting enough nutrients for my training so told me to start taking raw-protein (which tastes terrible btw!) and it just makes me so hungry!! is there anyway to stop the hunger? or just man up and ignore it? – mzrdnan Apr 16 2012 at 11:52
OH. So you aren't talking whey. You're taking the one by Garden of LIfe called RAW protein, correct? – foreveryoung Apr 16 2012 at 12:25
...If that is the case, you're probably hungry just cause that powder is filled with absolute garbage. I'd get something taht comes from an animal if you're looking to supplement. 100% whey protein isolate should do the trick. – foreveryoung Apr 16 2012 at 12:26
oh yeah I am using natural whey supplement no additives..kind of thing – mzrdnan Apr 16 2012 at 15:12

Try one or two tablespoons of heavy cream per shake, a dash of salt, and a teaspoon of http://www.amazon.com/Caffe-DVita-Imported-Espresso-Canisters/dp/B000IZ3GXA/ if you use chocolate shakes and are into such things.

If your shake isn't tasty try this http://www.amazon.com/ULTIMATE-NUTRITION-ISO-SENSATION-FUDGE/dp/B002EVPVS4/ . They're like milkshakes.

I get the same hunger feeling after shakes. I add 1/4 cup or so of coconut oil, and/or a couple raw eggs. It slows the feeling of hunger, and gives it a nice texture. And adds some great nutrients. – Pete Apr 16 2012 at 14:33
thanks!! i might try making a bulletproof coffee out of it in the morning? mix the coffee and protein?? – mzrdnan Apr 16 2012 at 15:26
