I just noticed that the tub of coconut oil that I use for cosmetic purposes has developed black streaks in it. Obviously I will stop using it but why has this happened? The jar was in my car for about a week while I was camping, so it might have gotten quite hot. But then again I thought coconut oil was meant to be really heat resistant. Has anyone else experienced this? Before I went camping the oil had only been opened for a few days, so it has only been exposed to air for a couple weeks.

If your stuff looks like my stuff after I go camping, it's probably just dirt. Are there matching black streaks on your face and fingers? ;) – RanchHand Apr 17 2012 at 7:54

Sounds like fungus, do not eat it, do not use it.

Next time, be careful how you take out the coconut oil out of the container (i.e. don't stick your hand in it, use a clean spoon/ice cream scoop if it's solid).

Better yet, move a little bit of coconut oil at a time into a small jar - say a baby food jar, and use that within a few days, then wash it out with hot water and dish soap, and reload the jar as needed.

After I've opened a tin of coconut milk and left it in the fridge overnight it seems to separate into layers and the top watery layer is a bit black, I just get a fork and mix it through again before using it. So could be the same thing with the oil.
