Now I know there are wonderful sources of information out there about the paleo diet on the net and in books. However, people who are wondering out loud why I'm having a burger without a bun do not want to look up any information. They want quick and dirty answers that go beyond "Bread is bad". People tend to get defensive when you say that sort of thing.
What do you tell people who want to know why you always pass up the bread basket? People who are not interested in researching but are ready to grill you here and now about the lack of gluten on your plate.
Simple- if you want to keep it non-confrontational just say "I have a gluten intolerance". True, and nobody is going to break your balls for not eating something that makes you sick. That is the quickest and dirtiest answer. When people ask about my eating, I just say "I'm gluten intolerant, and have cut out processed foods." Nobody is going to give you heck about eating whole/natural foods. Nobody notices that I hardly eat grains, they usually just praise me for cooking all my own meals from scratch. Even the fellow dietetics student who did my diet analysis said she though I ate great. It doesn't have to be a great big deal if you don't want it to be.
Just say gluten is the root of all evil and then mention that those gluten proteins are probably irritating their gut lining right now and that you don't want them to come crying to you when they eventually have some sort of stereotypical western disease and sternly tell them it's not a matter of if, but when.
