Hey everybody, been lurking here for a few weeks. I'm in the middle of week 3 of my paleo journey and I honestly couldn't possibly have expected any better. I'm down almost 11 pounds (5'11", 229 when I started, 218 today) and my energy level is thru the roof. I also find my appetite has curbed dramatically and I'm not near as hungry throughout the day as I used to be.

Anyway... I'm starting to get a little sick of coconut oil. My GF and I are always looking for newer recipes and such... We've tried Paleo Zucchini "bread", Pumpkin muffins, etc. A ton of these recipes call for coconut oil, and I can't seem to get past everything tasting like coconut.

So I'm wondering if there are other Paleo-friendly options out there that you can't taste as much when used in cooking. How are Almond Oil and Sunflower Oil? Any suggestions welcomed!! Thanks.

liquid oils are generally worse than solid fats (unless hydrogenated, ie trans) due to the n6 content. Even olive oil has a fair bit, although lard is up there too. Coconut oil is great, but butter, ghee, beef tallow and even lard are some pretty good choices. And if you are worried about dairy, ghee (clarified butter) has none of the residual whey/casein/lactose - and tastes REALLY good. Butter and ghee have some butyrate - a short chain fat - that is good for gut health. Grass fed/pastured is best, if you can get it and can afford it. Most stores have Kerrygold, which is a Primal favorite. – Dave S. Apr 18 2012 at 10:33

I really hated it at first too. My eggs tasted like coconut! Gross! But I actually like it now! We get highly refined to cook with too, and it has no taste. Even the Wal-Mart here in Alabama has it! – NewEra Apr 18 2012 at 14:17

Ghee (clarified butter) is pure fat like coconut oil. It has no proteins in it or lactose so is safe to eat. It also slays every other oil in taste IMHO. You can make it yourself but I buy it at Whole Foods. Congrats on the weight loss and energy! That's wonderful!! – MeepsIsWellfed Apr 18 2012 at 22:22
Rendered duck fat is pretty tasty for frying eggs in. Just delish. Found at health food store near the butter I think. – MeepsIsWellfed Apr 18 2012 at 22:24

Paleo Zucchini bread, Pumpkin muffins...

Looks like somebody is craving for SAD foods and is trying to replace them with Paleo alternatives :)

Why not to experiment and try something new? Trust me, after a few days of no-salt no-condiments steamed veggies you start to appreciate the way they taste!

I can tell one beet from another just by tasting them!

As for your question:

These oils I have tried so far:

sunflower (cold pressed roasted tastes good)

safflower (bad)

pumpkin seed (tastes horrible)

almond (did not like it)

extra virgin olive (allergic)

pure coconut (does not taste good to me, allergic)

virgin coconut (love the taste, not sure about the side effects)

sesame (tastes good)

grape seed (tastes horrible)

rose hip seed (allergic)

linseed/flax seed oil (do not recommend - stay away if you are sensitive - had horrible side effects)

grass-fed butter

avocado oil (I am allergic to avocados)

My verdict:

I am allergic to all nut/seed oils except virgin coconut oil, and even that gives me a weird reaction (pulpitations). My stomach cannot handle other oils well. I also question their impact on my health.

I am not sure nutritionally wise, but taste wise and allergy wise I liked grass-fed butter the best. My body seemed to be okay with it. But not sure how Paleo it is.

I am allergic to a lot of stuff due to gluten sensitivity and leaky gut, so... you might not want my advice. See for yourself.

ditto. I'm all for the butter. I am at conflict with myself sometimes because my whole life I've been conditioned to think Butter = Bad...but it is so delicious!! And I think it makes your more primal than paleo...but if I'm going to have any vices, I'm glad it's this! – mzrdnan Apr 18 2012 at 9:39

I agree. I see lots of people making "paleo" cookies and cake. That's great and fun for special occasions, but having it daily in the form of muffins, cookies, pancakes and whatever isn't good. Paleo carby junk is still junk. – NewEra Apr 18 2012 at 14:16
VB, if you have leaky gut you might try switching to rendered duck fat and ghee which are both kinder on the guts than most oils. They are GAPS recommended which is all about healing a leaky gut. Cheers. – MeepsIsWellfed Apr 18 2012 at 22:25
Thanks Meepsls! I have tried both. I hated ghee (I had no bad reaction to it though) and I almost threw up on duck fat. I don't do well with fats because of my liver. I have to be very careful. But thanks for your advice! – VB Apr 19 2012 at 4:51

Use refined (not hydrogenated!) coconut oil. It'll be sitting right next to the virgin coconut oil, but a couple dollars cheaper. It's completely tasteless and works well in baking.

i used wallnut oil to do some baking with, pretty subtle flavour and seemed to work well. Might be worth a try?

gotta be careful with the paleo baking though - paleo doughnuts are still doughnuts, just less bad ;-)

but props on the weight loss, its a big achievement and hopefully it continues

I second the concern about too much paleo baking. It's just replacing junk with junk in the end.

That said, I cook with palm KERNEL oil. It has similar fatty acid content to CO but is absolutely tasteless. It's harder to find food grade than palm oil. I've seen palm oil mentioned here quite a few times also, though I've never tried that myself.

If the coconut oil straight from the jar is unappetizing for you, you could try this "coquito" mix that I make:

Melt 2 cups coconut oil in a pan. 50 grammes pure organic fair-trade cacao powder

I grind up in a coffee grinder Gojis Sesame seeds Linseed Fenugreek Coconut flakes Rosehips (when I have them in season) Cinnamon Cream about a quarter litre, store-bought ginger Pumpkin seeds Bee Pollen Eggs usually 3 or so, free range from our farm

a powdermix of wild berries i buy from Iherb (madrelabs)

Add all the powdered stuff slowly, mixing all the while, to the melted coconut oil. Lastly the cream and eggs, stir.

Place in a glass dish and refrigerate to solidify. Cut into tiny squares and go snacking on them as you wish.

we kind of live on this.

Put down the spoon and step away from the coconut oil. Seriously. Coconut oil is one of a few good fats. There's no reason, at all, to over-do coconut oil. Heck, I haven't touched my coconut oil in weeks now. Olive oil and butter have been my fats of preference recently. Red palm oil too.

You can get very pure coconut oil, which has very little taste. It is more highly refined and fewer of the phytonutrients. Avoid jars labled virin, raw, organic.These are usually less refined and retains more of a distinctive flavour. If you can learn to like the taste, raw virgin coconut oil is a far better, less processed choice.

Im not a coconut oil fan myself either. I stick with butter, or ghee if i need to cook with higher temps.

Sometimes i scoop some fat off the top of braising meat and save it for use in another meal.

Dont sweat it either way, as long as the fat you use is of a decent quality and you dont burn it, you cant really go wrong.

While you are 100% technically correct -- refined coconut oil will have less flavor -- I disagree very strongly that you would recommend it to anyone. The refined oil has been denatured by heat and pressure, as well as containing various amounts of the chemicals used in its extraction. – greymouser Apr 18 2012 at 16:50

If I try to eat more than a tablespoon of coconut oil, I risk getting sick to my stomach. Butter treats me a lot better and red palm oil is pretty good too. Coconut oil, it should be remembered, is a processed food. Butter is too, but our ancestors could actually find similar amounts of animal fats when they killed an animal. We only ever encountered coconut oil in the amounts naturally found in the whole coconut, after all that hacking necessary to actually get into the coconut.

Once upon a time I was using coconut oil in everything. I am fruit intolerant which is probably why I started getting sick. :( Now I use primarily butter and everything is better than ever. :)

Just eat real meat and real veggies in their more natural state, and don't worry about trying to re-create old foods.

Suck up the taste. It is one of the greatest complete forms of nutrition. Refined coconut oil provides you not near any of the benefits.
