For the past year now I've had memory loss, to the point where I remember almost nothing about my past unless someone brings up the memory for me. I also have almost no short term memory and have a really hard time remembering things that happened just hours ago. It all started when my leaky gut syndrome got much worse last year. Since then I've had an out of control inflammatory response that is chronic and always feel very tired and stressed out.

I believe chronically elevated cortisol levels are to blame at least partially, but I'm wondering if there's more to it than that. Could it be a choline deficiency, and if so what's the best form of choline to take? I know eggs are high in it but I'm allergic to them.

My diet is at least decent, I don't have any junk food and try to eat lots of meat, veggies, fruit, and some rice and nuts.

Any suggestions on how to improve memory and clear up inflammation in the brain would be much appreciated.

Cause of memory loss is beyond the scope of the advice given here at PH and may indicate a serious neurological problem. Please see a doctor. – April S. Apr 18 2012 at 19:24
Chris, I agree with April S. I'm going to close the question and ask you to consult a doctor. – Ed Apr 18 2012 at 23:00
Cure your memory loss with coconut oil and mct oils. It works wonders. Within a day you'll notice a difference! Do some research for yourself, don't take my word for it. Check your sources though, the mayo clinic sure won't tell you the truth. – Chelsea Apr 19 2012 at 0:54

The suspicion I got reading that was that you're depressed, which fits well with chronic stress, low energy and poor concentration/memory. If that's the case dealing with it for what it is would be an important step. What do you mean when you say you've got an out of control inflammatory response?

However you really ought to see a doctor and get a full history/examination.

Honestly, when I checked out your profile and saw that you're just 25, I would recommend going to the doctor. When I first read the question, I thought it would be an older person trying to control memory loss due to some natural aging.

This sounds like a potentially serious health problem for someone so young. It doesn't seem to be typical "brain fog" if you can't recall entire events like that. I'm not trying to scare you or anything, but that might be a symptom of a brain tumor. I'm not saying it is, but if your memory is that bad, I would be a little more concerned than focusing just on your diet. It could be something more.

Please see a doctor and possibly try to get referred a neurologist or whatever they recommend.

Definitely go to the doctor, and in the meantime follow Paleo, and cook/eat with coconut oil and get some D3 if you don't already. This sounds serious!

One word: doctor. If you have no short term and very little long term memory, that is an indication of something very serious. Don't mess around.

Re. the choline- you can buy choline supplements, but kidneys and liver are among the best sources- a serving of either can give you 1-2g (which is a pretty huge quantity).
