Does it matter what brand of gelatin powder I use? I usually use Knox, but I have looked into buying the general brand at Kroger/Ralphs as well. It seems that many recommend the Great Lake gelatin, but I look at their ingredients and they all only have one ingredient. Gelatin. So what's the difference? I thought only the flavored jell-o packs are the ones with MSG and excitotoxins in them.

I use gelatin as desserts, topical ointment, and supplements to grow hair.

I think Great Lakes uses pastured cows and pigs for their gelatin. The other brands probably come from CAFO animals.

I also use Great Lakes brand. The kosher stuff comes from pastured cows. – blueballoon Apr 19 2012 at 19:28
I doubt that really makes much of a difference, gelatin is a highly (relatively) processed food. – Matt Apr 19 2012 at 20:04

I also don't think there's a big difference nutritionally when it comes to gelatin, just in the way the animal lived its life before slaughter. Since the OP's past questions have included concerns such as the environmental impact of coconut oil and interest in sustainable seafood, I figured it would be something he'd be interested in when buying gelatin. – Sunny Beaches Apr 19 2012 at 20:11
So I assume that the Knox gelatin and the general brand gelatin is the same then? I will keep Great Lakes in mind though, it's just that it's a bit expensive for the moment. – Paleomofo Apr 20 2012 at 7:53

no not the same! Pastured animals are soooo much healthier than CAFO! Night and day difference in nutrition!
