Hello -

I've been hypoglycemic all my life. In the last 5 years I lost control of my weight and gained 40 pounds. I discovered Paleo in 2009 and droped 10. Since January of the year I tried low carb, then VLC. I took off another 10 but ended up adding more carbs in because my lips got very dry and cracked my skin got paper thin and old looking. I would bleed at the slightest scrape. Although I felt great otherwise these symptoms were worrisome.

I upped the carbs to approximately an apple a day and these symptoms went away. The 10 pounds came back immediately - argh!

My endo just confirmed that I'm insulin resistant and put me on Glucophage. I hate the idea of resorting to meds to lose the weight but I'm beginning to face facts. It's just not going to come off any other way. I exercise hard 6 days a week and I'm good with diet and calorie intake.

Can any of you relate to my story?

Have any of you tried Glucophage?

you gained ten pounds adding nothing but an apple to a diet already void of carbohydrate? Really? – foreveryoung Apr 19 2012 at 20:40
I would add white rice or portion-controlled yams to counter dry skin and chapped lips. What do u mean you're "insulin resistant"? – Namby Pamby Apr 19 2012 at 22:36

Also, consider only exercising 2-3 times a week to lower stress on your body. – wmertens Apr 19 2012 at 22:50
Lots of people do not do well on VLC, it is not for everyone at all, and it doesn't sound like it's for you. I'm confused about your weight loss goals though- is it the 40 lbs initially that you gained and want to lose? How is your digestion/gut? How long have you been eating / not eating paleo? – JeJ Apr 20 2012 at 1:58

I'd eat carbs, but if you really don't want to, eat some shellfish, some liver perhaps. Dry skin is likely caused by thyroid issues. – Korion Apr 20 2012 at 12:42
yeah i have a feeling i may have hypothyroid issues...is there any natural way to deal with it? id hoped going paleo would do the trick but i dont know now :'( – mzrdnan Apr 20 2012 at 15:36

Check your iron levels and have a full thyroid panel done.
