Ok so a bit of background: Been eating paleo/phd style for 5 months and my digestion has improved but still not fully recovered. Generally my digestion is slow, for example if i stop eating at 8pm i still have a full stomach at 11pm. Lately I tried eating a handful or raisins after my meals and it seems to be speeding up my digestion and its quite noticable. What could be the reason for this? btw i eat about 100-150g of carbs total mostly from sweet potato and rice, not counting veggies. If i eat more starch it doesn't have the same effect as eating raisins on my digestion. Also chewing food is much easier now because i produce more saliva. So for some reason raisins have a really positive effect on my digestion but I'm trying to figure out how..

I have no weight problems btw and I would say pretty good insulin sensitivity.

Could it be the fibre? A bit like eating prunes for regularity? A handful of raisins adds up to a pretty big bunch of grapes. – Jeannine Apr 20 2012 at 6:16
Raisins are a source of massive farting in my house. Thank god my wife is off the raisin bran! Once, she had a bag of dried apricots whilst we were on vacation. That was an extremely rough week! (Warning - a word was used that is not meant to be spoken - and I don't mean fart.) – Dave S. Apr 20 2012 at 12:24
Yea raisins give me gas too so thats why i chew as much as i can and spit out the skin/fiber. no gas :) – paleoguy11 Apr 20 2012 at 17:06

That's the fructose. Eating a lot of sugar was one of the many ways I improved my digestion a lot. – Korion May 4 2012 at 7:39

There are 3 ways I can stop gas from forming : sugar, retinol and thyroid hormone. – Korion May 18 2012 at 10:21

8pm-11pm seems pretty normal to me. Unless you ate 1 blueberry.

The raisins aren't speeding up the digestion, they are speeding up the movement of food through your tract. Could be good, also, could be bad.

true, there is a difference between speed of digestion and movement of food through the gut. – paleoguy11 Apr 20 2012 at 17:05
