Has anyone noticed a difference when taking digestive enzymes after a cheat meal? Do they help blunt the nasty effects of a gluten/vegetable oil laden meal?

I have no personal experience with them and am just wondering out of curiosity. I rarely cheat. Yesterday, I went out to a steakhouse for my brother's birthday and ordered grilled prime rib with a side of broccoli and although it tasted amazing, I knew there were probably some not-so-Paleo stuff added to them, albeit minuscule. But my friends and family do like to go out a lot and if I don't want to give up my social life, I'd like to have something handy if I decide to break the rules a little bit.

Not necessarily for cheat meals, since I've been disgustingly strict lately, but I do take a stomach acid capsule when I eat a large serving of fatty meat and/or starch--I tend to have low stomach acid and the capsules definitely help the quality and speed of my digestion. – Nance Apr 20 2012 at 16:36

A Digestive Enzyme may help because even if you are eating well, it doesn't mean that your body is getting the nutrients it needs. Our bodies produce digestive enzymes that break down food into nutrients. These nutrients are then absorbed into your body. As we get older we produce fewer digestive enzymes on our own and with our standard diet and all the processed foods we consume it is unlikely that most of us produce enough digestive enzyme on our own. Another great article can be read at: http://www.puristat.com/bloating/digestive-enzymes.aspx. I hope that this is helpful.

Digestive Enzymes seem to be recommended but for me, they dont help, in fact I often wonder if they 'speed' things up for me.....I've lately started taking a capsule of pure carbon when my tummy flip flops or shows signs of something disagreeing.....I dont generally cheat, I have enough issues with normal foods. But, it does the trick and it has gotten me off immodium, which I've been on for years.

So, I say, see if it helps, make sure they are clean enzymes, there are so many types for different things as well (to help with fat, proteins, carbs. etc.)....make sure you are taking the right kind for the reason and perhaps they'll help!

My guts are pretty sensitive, and that meal would not have done a thing to me. I guess I'm sloppy, but I wouldn't have considered that a cheat either. Enzymes only help certain things. They'll help you digest things you don't digest well, but they don't 'erase' a cheat meal.

I take the NOW super enzymes daily, just because my stomach doesn't make enough of the good stuff without help yet. If they help or not on a 'cheat' meal depends on the cheat. I can eat corn and the enzymes do me a solid. But if I eat beans of any kind? Aww hell. There is NO damage control I can do for beans.

Be the best at Paleo you can be. There is no 100%. There just isn't. You're still in your 80% - 20%. If you go out and get a grilled meat and sauce-free veg.....that isn't a cheat. Not really, you know? Now a pizza....there's a cheat. Or cake. My stomach hurts just thinking of that.

I take NAG after eating wheat and I don't notice my stomach getting the rumbles when usually it would, so that may or may not mean something.

Your constant worrying and then posting about it has probably caused more damage in the form of stress than either taking or not taking digestive enzymes.

Cory, you are overly critical towards me lately. "Curiosity" does NOT equal "constant worrying." Why do you take my questions out of context? On top of that, your answers/comments are unhelpful. – April S. Apr 20 2012 at 17:21
