My dad has been managing his T2 diabetes pretty well. He still follows some of the strange instructions from his diabetes nurse, like eating 3 units of carbs (aka 3 pieces of toast aka 60+ grams of carbs) in the morning and having a bowl of high-fibre cereal before bed.
However, he's pretty "Paleo" (without intending to be) the rest of the time. He eats eggs and bacon for breakfast, meat and veg for lunch and dinner (with some toast thrown in at breakfast and then the cereal at night) and he snacks on nuts.
His morning glucose has been getting higher lately (it used to be around 7 but lately has been trending towards 8-9) and his doctor wants to increase his metformin. He asked for a few weeks to try and work with his diet, but 'work with his diet' meant just cutting out the lunch carb units he had been eating and getting a cereal with a higher fibre content for before bed.
I've tried very hard to explain Paleo but he doesn't really get it. He is generally very receptive to advice from the internet (I know, weird). I sent him the Mark's Daily Apple intro to diabetes and a Robb Wolf thing about metformin, but I was hoping for some more CONCRETE Paleo-related advice. Does anyone know of a website or a particular Paleo blogger who gives concrete solutions and advice to T2 diabetics and backs their stuff up with reasonably decent sources?
I'd really appreciate it. He goes to the doctor tomorrow and will likely be getting more drugs. I got him to agree to at least chat with his doctor about 'alternative' solutions, but I don't think he really knows what to say to the doctor. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
