What should I say to them and I know that some of you arrange deals with them to get it for free if they were throwing it out before, how would I word it and ask them? Sorry if this is such a stupid question lol.

"Hey, do you have any fat trimmings?" usually works for me.

One of four things will happen:

"No, the meat is trimmed before we get it." In which case, you're SOL.
"Yes, but we aren't allowed to give them to you." There are a few places that have company policies against it - supposedly because they think eating fat is dangerous. (No joke. I was told that.)
"Yes, but we already threw them out. But we can save them for you next time if you want." In which case you say yes, and set a date on when you will pick it up. DO NOT miss this appointment or they will never do it again. Remember, they are doing you a favor here.
"Yes, how much do you need?" In which case they will fill up a bag for you and you can be on your merry way.

Yeah, my brother works at just a standard regular old grocery store, he gets usually slightly elderly ladies demanding fresh lard or tallow for their baking, he just goes to the back and throws it in a bag for them, free of charge. WAIT!!! I thought that fat (unless from grass fed sources) is super high in omega 6 and therefore bad. Are you guys asking for conventional fat and if so, for what??? – CaveMan_Mike Apr 21 2012 at 3:00

Mike, you are right, but I am broke and this is what I have to make do with for now. Other things I use are conventional butter, and organic coconut oil. – Soul Apr 21 2012 at 3:11

@Mike - I can't speak for everyone, but for me, I'm pretty done worrying about OMG Omega6 and OMG fruit and OMG starches OMG... you get the point. It's fat from an animal. My great grandmother would recognize it as food. Yes, I try to get the pastured/humanely raised animals that live on pristine farms with clean air, have daily appointments with their masseuse and get sung to sleep by fairies... but if I get the occasional fat from the supermarket, I'm quite sure I will be fine. – A at Grain Free Diet Apr 21 2012 at 5:54

Do you live in an area that has Halal butcher shops? Usually they have them inside Arabic/Afghan grocery stores. I've never had a problem and I've asked a bunch of places for fat. Usually when I buy some meat I will also ask if they can give me some fat. I'm sure if you purchase something they will give it to you for free.

We usually say do you have any fat or trimmings for our dogs. Quite often I get all the trimmings of steaks, tbones etc.. from all customers. They say they have to throw it in the garbage otherwise.
