Hi guys, cravings!!! I've had this for a while. I eat really well and disciplined on a paleo type diet generally low carb.
I'm 23% bf with some fat around the belly I want to shift. I've started to put it down to stress, although I don't have a stressful life, I have started to cut out caffeine after 3 not weight train in the evenings and generally sort my sleep out. Any way the point being, I cock up on my diet when I'm stressed, if I have an argument or work late I feel the need to eat chocolate, pastries sausage rolls and alcohol.
Done a bit of research that suggests its quite normal and stems from old times or could be my body is telling me I need something. I think paul jaminet said something like young the carbs.
So if I upped my carbs every day with a bit of sweet potato or bannana after a workout to about 70-100 grams will this cue it and can I still burn off body fat.
Your thoughts? Anyone had the same problem ? J
Depends, for me, doing any amount of carbs (except after a huge workout that depletes glycogen levels, which I do weekly) is detrimental.
I'm about 20% fat at this point.
I don't have carb cravings and this is what I did to get rid of them. Take a 1/8th to 1/4 teaspoon of L-Glutamine whenever you have cravings. This can be used by the brain as a source of food (yes, it does pass the blood-brain barrier unlike a lot of proteins), and it will quiet carb cravings.
Extra virgin coconut oil can also help you get into a ketogenic state, and if you want do an IF. I usually have about a tablespoon in coffee per day. Don't start that high, start with one teaspoon. I mix it with cocoa powder so I avoid the oil-slick at the top effect. You can substitute a square of chocolate instead (next paragraph) in hot water with cocoa powder if you're trying to cut out coffee (or use decaf). Coconut oil just kills my appetite, so it's perfect for doing IF's.
(Yes, I realize, it's not a real fast, but this way I'm avoiding the carb and protein digestive pathways and the MCTs become ketones very easily.)
If you have a Lindt store near you, you can find 90%, and 99% chocolate, but, I've found a better source. My local supermarket carries 100% Ghirardelli banking chocolate bars. They are really bitter, but you don't have to eat a lot of them. They're also about 4x less expensive than the 99% Lindt "eating" version, so check out your supermarket's baking section.
Be careful to get the 100% baking bar and not something else as it may be 60% and may have other stuff in the ingredients you might not want.
Lindt gives you a very think 99% bar and charges you almost 2x the price of the 90% bar, so you're paying 4x for it
You could add a drop of some sweetener to the baking bar squares, or try eating it with something slightly sweet if you must.
On a psychological level, you might find yourself unthinkingly grabbing some snack or food you have available, or might get a thought in your head that says "eating that would be a good idea", you can kill those thoughts by challenging yourself and saying "Oh yeah? Watch me NOT eat that at all." Takes some practice, but that inner dialogue helps quite a lot.
If you do heavy workouts and feel like death afterward, by all means, about an hour after the workout (not before), consume a small amount of carbs. I do about half a cup to a cup of mashed sweet potatoes with some cinnamon, coconut oil, and a touch of vanilla extract and it totally prevents that zombie for a day effect.
I have a long history of cravings. Actually, if you look up my Paleohack account, I have asked at least three questions about cravings.
Okay, just so you know. I have stopped eating all fruit (even berries) and I do not have any dairy products. None, even butter. But I eat plenty of vegetables and tons of protein.
I have re-introduced the seeds because my vitamin E intake was too low.
So this is my fifth day living like that. My cravings are gone. Even the chocolate ones (my old vice). I am no longer hungry.
I cannot explain it. It has only been five days so I don't know what is going to happen with me long term. But so far so good.
Try to eliminate (just do it as an experiment) all fruit. All of it. All sugar. And dairy. See if it is going to make a difference. It made a difference for me.
If I do get cravings in the future, I will come back to this post and I will let you know.
I have been having the same problem! I thought I was going insane.
I did the 30 day challenge (I'm a newbie) and it went great. THe first few days were a little rough, but got over it. Didn't have a problem with cravings or eating "off-label."
When I was finished I added 73% dark chocolate (I cannot imagine EVER thinking 99% sweet) and have been having a banana with breakfast. Everyday, by about 3, I am hunting - literally - for something carby and sugar filled.
So. Back to no more chocolate and fruit.

I pound about half a bar of 85-90% chocolate a day. Why not? Chocolate has some interesting properties. Peter at Hyperlipid (http://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com/) pounds it as well and he's low carb.
Yeah, it may even help burn body fat faster because it increases metabolism after being low carb. If I'm too low carb I find I'm looking for the cookie dough ice cream in no time. Also if you want an occasional treat try 99 percent chocolate or make yourself a full fat coconut milk ice cream, all you need is a tablespoon of honey for two cans I find as long as you've overcome your sweet tooth (satisfying and low sugar). If my family is have serious cravings they know to head for a scoop of coconut oil.
