My friends and I are visiting our old University for an annual bar crawl.
I know the perils of excess drinking...but, I drink rarely and I'm looking forward to this event. I don't plan on remaining wasted for 12 hours straight, though I will probably have several drinks over the course of the day and into the night.
Does anyone (those in college?) have advice on the best meal options to have over the course of the day. Should I stick with mainly protein, mainly fat, or my normal habits? I am fully paleo with the exception of heavy cream. Are there any foods that I should avoid while drinking? (Those that might make me feel worse the next day etc. due to the alcohol combo). I'm planning on bringing a lunch box (I'm sooo cool) or snack pack so that I can easily avoid the slew of pizza places.
This blog post written by ph's very own Stabby is really the authority on binge drinking. Take a look!
Martin at leangains advises to only drink spirit, and to eat predominantly protein before, during, and after while avoiding fats and carbs.
Personally, I have two crawls I attend yearly - and not only do I drink 1 full glass of water for every alcoholic beverage, I only eat one meal the day after, a big salty fatty hangover-curing breakfast, and I try to spend some time in a sauna or hottub to sweat while I drink even more water. The fasting tends to speed up the repair of any gut from any indiscretions, and the hot tub and extra water to drink tends to speed up the repair of my immune system and general well-being after a day of damage.
I avoid gluten during the crawl, but still end up eating crap (pub fries, tacos, bunless cheeseburgers).
I am doing the Erin Express bar crawl in Philadelphia this weekend and the following weekend. It's amazing. The best meal for before, during, and after the bar crawl has to be 4-5 eggs scrambled with bacon and hot sauce. If you do dairy, cover it in cheese.
My husband swears by this trick before you go to bed. He never gets hung over anymore. He drinks 8 ounces of coconut water, A glass of regular water and pedialite. Also B12 prevents a hangover so eat shellfish because they are high in B12. I agree with Joshua to drink a glass of water for every liquor drink. Also, be sure to drink top shelf liquor without sugar etc.Good Luck Have Fun.

From personal experience:
I drink enough on occasion that I wake up drunk. I've been experimenting with the following: I wait until I get the hangover headache, which is delayed since I'm still drunk when I wake, and drink a glass of milk. I think that is about the right level of carbs to kill off any alcohol induced hypoglycemia without overshooting. So far, it's been working for me. But I'm VLC when not boozing.
Please, do not take Tylenol (Acetaminophen) during or after drinking.
