I see so many acronyms for different paleo related concepts. What do they all mean?

I think this question could become part of the website itself. Perhaps under the faqs? – gilliebean Mar 1 2010 at 16:37

@David, it's like the opposite of happy. You know you have it when the corners of your mouth point down. – borofergie May 27 2012 at 6:23

Tiny correction: CHD = coronary heart disease (not cardiac), as it refers specifically to disease affecting the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. This is therefore a subtype of "heart disease" (probably the most frequent) and is the one related to atherosclerosis of the arteries. – archaea Mar 2 2010 at 18:14

I was super excited to have accidentally found this thread and it says it is in the community wiki, how do I see that? I looked in the FAQ and don't see a link.

Not sure I am responding to your question, Melissa, but as I see things "community wiki" is a mode of question or answer rather than a place to put questions or answers. You make your question/answer a community wiki if you want other people to be able to edit/add to it and if you don't want to get reputation points from it. (There's also a user named community, paleohacks.com/users/-1/community but that's a little different.) This question was still David Csonka's for example -- you can see it there if you go to his profile -- he just didn't get the points from it on his total. – Paul Dec 19 2010 at 18:54
Thanks Paul! I thought I was missing a wiki somewhere on the site. – sherpamelissa Dec 19 2010 at 19:00

I feel a bit stupid, as I feel I should know it, but what do people mean when they write about "n=1"? I kind of got a feeling from the context, but would want to know for sure.thanks :)

I could be mistaken - and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am - but I believe "n=1" means, well, you. Something that is completely anecdotal, and may not apply to everyone, or even anyone else. – JansSushiBar Apr 18 2011 at 15:20
Size sample: one person. So "tested" on one person although often used as a synonym for self-experimentation. For instance "My n=1 dairy experiment showed..." – Ikco Apr 18 2011 at 15:45
thanks! that's what I thought from the context, but couldn't understand the origin. Now it makes more sense :) – Yoannah_offca Apr 19 2011 at 2:25
The origin is from scientific literature where N=sample size. It is used to calculate (among other things) statistical significance – peter May 27 2012 at 0:17

Can I just humbly request that we not all start over-acronyming just because we have a sweet new dictionary starting? I would hate to see esoteric posts begin to alienate folks who've come here looking for an open community to help them find answers; that would be antithetical to what we're all here for, I think. This is an incredible tool for inclusivity, which should ideally serve to make these ideas more accessible c:

I think this is an awesome tool to be able to check in order to understand the threads here. Perhaps it should be available on the home page with a direct link, or even a glossary of terms, that way those that aren't "in the know" can quickly glance and then better understand what they are reading, whether a response to a question they asked or other thread.
