hubby and I were ...uh ahem ... enjoying some coconut oil in the bedroom,... I maybe ingested 1/2 a tablespoon of straight high quality oil. 5 mins later my stomach was rumbling like I just drank a cup of milk (latose intolerant). Then I realized that the coconut oil and the rumbling happen quite a bit. What might cause that? Seems to be 30 mins to hr of rumbly noise...with no strong after effects beyond that.

Have been paleo for more than a year, usually have a little bit of oil everyday, but only rumbles when not accompanied by other food.

It is very gently laxative, that is why. :) Maybe not the most romantic oil in this case... – hannah Apr 23 2012 at 14:55

This is a very common experience. Start with a teaspoon or less and work your way up.

As to a definitive answer to why this happens in some people I don't think I've ever seen one. Lots of speculation but no reasons that will pass any scientific scrutiny. Just know it will end once your body gets used to the CO.

I don't do well with coconut oil either. However I have no such issue with palm kernel oil (another rich source of medium chain triglycerides,) ghee, or tallow/lard. No hard and fast rule that you HAVE to have coconut oil.

I have the same issue, I THINK, its because it has anti bacterial properties which in even 1 TB can start to kill off any 'nasties' and creates die off (toxins released from dead or dying nasties).

It is definitely something to start in very small amounts and work up over time, or if you are brave, go for it, rough it for a few weeks and be done with it!

I just noted that gold label coconut oils are 'fermented' and perhaps that adds to the tummy grumblies? I see mine are all gold label so probably processed that way...hmmm, makes sense, anything fermented gives me the rumblies as well. – Kelly Apr 23 2012 at 17:10

I can't do coconut oil and my husband does very well with it. We've somewhat attributed it to ancestry (he's Asian, I'm Eastern European). I do far, far better with grassfed butter, which is unfortunate because I do love the taste of coconut oil with some things. Eggs, however, are so much better with butter.
