This heart surgeon speaks out on what really causes heart disease. He's performed over 5,000 heart surgeries. I highly recommend checking out what he has to say about paleo-like diets.

This guy has had his medical license revoked. Not the best source. – Brad Apr 23 2012 at 18:58

As a second-year medical student with constant exposure to the standards of medicine, it's always very refreshing to hear someone who is candid and up-to-date about the facts of the disease process, and who also doesn't try to make excuses to fit what we currently know (and are being taught) about the inflammatory nature of cardiovascular disease, into the old paradigms that simply don't work.

Good find, thanks for sharing.

Yep. Dr. Lundell's book was a key milestone on the path that led me to paleo (later). I thought he made a clear case that inflammation, not cholesterol per se, is the underlying cause of arterial disease, and that CLA is a good thing for actually reversing existing damage.

Thus, I would suggest that his work is useful for helping people understand why they don't need Lipitor, but should cut back on processed foods, and increase intake of grassfed meat. His logic is easy to understand by lay people, so it is easily shareable with friends and family without scaring them off with the whole crazy caveman thing ;-)

I tried to share this with my cousin (who is VERY opinionated when it comes to health, she's completely anti-fats) and this is what she said,

"It's interesting but not factual yet. He didn't reference any peer reviewed work. He really doesn't have much proof of what he is saying. "

Is this true? If so, are there sources that do have proof?

How does Cousin feel about the fact that no study shows sugars and rancid industrial oils to be beneficial? – 42 Apr 24 2012 at 1:12
