So I'm looking for more books. Paleo/nutrition books. Like I always am. I loved Good Calories, Bad Calories by Taubes, I loved Robb's Paleo Solution, and I'm looking for more. Specifically though, I want to find some that go into the science and physiology a little more than the average book does. I had a great time reading GCBC and looking up things that he talked about that I didn't know about. Can anyone recommend some good books that maybe get a little deeper into things?

I tried to read Lights Out, and found it way too preachy. Great info, but I couldn't finish it. Mastering Leptin is also sitting on my bookshelf, halfway finished, but I can't get through that one either. I wish that it was written a little better. Ugh. I'm no author myself, and I don't mean to judge these authors either, but I found them difficult to get through. And I'm someone that was RIVETED by the million pages in GCBC.

I hope this isn't a stupid question.

Don’t forget The China Study – that’s a sciencey book too. The problem with most of these books is that unless you are familiar with the science before hand, then it’s like watching a one-sided debate. The author better be able to “win.” If you are not familiar with the literature not only do you have no idea if the reference even says what the book author claims, you have no idea if there are better studies by more respectable research groups in more prestigious journals. I think you might be better off reading the sciencey blogs where at least some debate and discussion is possible. – Paleo2.0 Apr 24 2012 at 13:55
The China Study is vegan, not paleo, and not very sciency when you really break it down. – legup Apr 24 2012 at 14:21

If you like 'em sciency, I'd definitely check out the Jaminets' Perfect Health Diet. And no, it's not a stupid question ;).

Ditto on the PHD - it's heavy on the references. – Dave S. Apr 24 2012 at 12:55
I would agree. Nice Book! – Eric Apr 24 2012 at 13:53

The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living by Volek and Phinney. Really excellent and science-based.

Dr Catherine Shanahan's Deep Nutrition was pretty good. Her emphasis on epigenetics was so fascinating to me I didn't want the book to end! The author is a practicing doctor with a background in molecular biology and cited the research well.

Well it's been a while since I read it, but I remember liking Trick and Treat.

Natural Hormonal Enhancement is a little-known GEM of a book by Rob Faigin.

It is AMAZING and came out a while before a lot of the newer books. He covers a staggering array of nutrition and lifestyle factors with great science but manages to keep it very readable. It's understandable by laypeople, but complex enough to make any nutrition/physiology geek a VERY HAPPY CAMPER.

The cover might make it look a little gimicky, but trust me, it is a STELLAR book for anyone interested in paleo nutrition and/or carb cycling, nutrient timing, health and longevity, optimal physical performance, and both physical and psychological wellness. You will constantly find yourself amazed at how Faigin puts it all together so seamlessly.
