An easy breakfast for me to make at work is to just make a few eggs and some sausage. But, I'm wondering, as far as Paleo/Whole 30 compliance goes, what is the best brand to get? Nitrate free? I've been getting a Trader Joe brand, but is there something better out there? Thanks!!! I love this website.. best support group ever!!

If not Whole 30 compliant, what's the best paleo option? – lab713 Apr 24 2012 at 15:12

The best is from local, humanely-raised pork. All of this worrying about minuscule amounts of added sugar and nitrites/nitrates (found in much larger amounts in saliva) is pointless.

US Wellness Meats has sausage specifically certified for the Whole 30 but, yeah, it's not cheap.

You can find a number of choices at Whole Foods, like Wellshire Farms and Applegate farms. The Turkey-sage flavor from Applegate has no sugars. They are frozen so you may have missed them but many supermarkets carry this brand.

Agree, Applegate farms is awesome! Their bacon is off the chain. – kaiulini Apr 24 2012 at 15:46

If you're in the Seattle area, Iserno's is a great nitrate/nitrite/preservative/sugar-free brand. It runs from $5-7/lb depending on where you go. Trader Joe's is the cheapest, QFC/Kroger is the most expensive.

I think $5/lb is about right.... wish they had some sugar-free here in Dallas area!! Can't find it anywhere :( – DanielleO812 Apr 24 2012 at 15:30
I second that - I get it at Super Target in Florida (though they have limited choices). I think it's usually 3.99/lb. – Eric Apr 25 2012 at 0:21
I didn't realize it shipped all the way to FL! I know it's made in Seattle, I just figured it was sold locally. – Ruth90 Apr 25 2012 at 3:47

If you find something, please let me know. I've searched several grocery stores and every brand of sausage I have found contains sugar - which is not allowed on the Whole30. I'd make sure even your Trader Joe's brand is sugar free.

I am on day 24 of my Whole30 and unfortunatley, i've had to give up the sausage for exactly this reason. Hoping it's going to taste that much better when I get to add it back into my diet in moderation!

I'm on the East Coast, in Maryland.. was hoping for something closer! – lab713 Apr 24 2012 at 15:11
Check out the farmers markets. I can get good sausages for about $6/lb that don't have sugar. They're usually the chorizo or hot Italian varieties. Most of the 'sweet Italian' sausages have sugar, as do many of the breakfast varieties. – blueballoon Apr 24 2012 at 15:39
