I personally like coconut meat. Good source of fats and pretty cheap.

Canned sardines in olive oil or water $1-2/tin. Do not buy the ones in soybean oil

oh yeah! I crave good sardines but my office mates aren't so happy with me. I take them outside to the picnic table now... – zot Apr 25 2012 at 4:07
Nom. I have to hide the evidence by rinsing the tin, shoving it back into the box, and burying it in the trash...otherwise there are complaints. So delicious, though. – Blossom1 Apr 26 2012 at 2:08

Berries like elderberry, huckleberry, wild strawberry, gooseberries, sea berry, cloud berry. Has anybody realized that it's a perfect snack idea?

Also, I wish there was a way to buy dehydrated meat. Not beef jerky (they add wheat and soy sauce to that), but just plain unsalted dried meat. And fish. Why there should be salt in everything?

You no have dehydrator? You can also do it regular oven too. Coconut aminos makes a great marinade. – Karin Apr 24 2012 at 16:08

Since I got my dehydrator, I'm pretty sure my butcher thinks I have a problem... or feed an army. I make beef or salmon jerky every 2 days, just meat + sea salt... sooooo good. the dehydrator is totally worth the small investment. I haven't gotten an electricity bill yet though, I wonder if I should be scared about that! – Jen Apr 24 2012 at 20:03
You can make solar dehydrators, too. I've even heard of people using their closed car on a hot day. Jerky is way too expensive to buy! I generally use ground beef, myself. NOT grocery store beef, from my own cow so I know it's OK when it's butchered and processed. I wouldn't trust grocery store ground beef for that kind of thing. – graciel Apr 25 2012 at 13:48
Paleo Kits beef jerky has no wheat or soy in it. Not as good as homemade jerky (imo), but a good option. stevesoriginal.com/images/uploads/… – Todd B May 2 2012 at 13:08

Coconut butter (shredded unsweetened coconut tossed in the food processor for 15-20 min). So damn good I've been giving it to people as gifts.

haven't tried this yet but it stares at me in the grocery store every week. Just not sure if i'm ready to give up $10 for a little jar!! Although it does sound delicious.... – DanielleO812 Apr 24 2012 at 15:35

Danielle- Do you have a food processor? Make it yourself if you do! Costs FAR less that way. I get 8oz organic coconut meat for something like $3. – blueballoon Apr 24 2012 at 15:37
I hope you mean 15-20 seconds :) – Matt B Apr 24 2012 at 15:39

Absolutely agree with blueballoon. It is one of the tastiest things I've ever bought at Whole Foods but it was like $15 for a 1 pound jar. The very next week I went back to Whole Foods and spent $4 on 3/4 pound of shredded unsweetened coconut and put it in the food processor for 15 minutes (scraping the sides occasionally). It comes out almost identical and for a fraction of the price. It really is delicious but it's not worth it unless you make it yourself. – Sam Apr 24 2012 at 15:42

I thought that too but a whole coconut is a real pain in the you-know-what. Also a whole coconut will be very wet inside (coconut water/milk) so you wont get the buttery consistency that comes from coconut meat and coconut fat in the dry shredded stuff. A blender should work as well but you will need to scrape the sides more. – Sam Apr 24 2012 at 19:31

Goat, venison and lamb break the rut of beef. Also canned kippers are my new favorite to pack for lunch or a picnic.

+1 for goat. Mmm... – Kation Apr 24 2012 at 22:48

Durian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian

Never has something so delicious smelled so bad to those not eating it.

Worse than kimchi? – trjones Apr 24 2012 at 15:45
I LOVE durian. SO SO GOOD!!! Kimchi smells like the best aroma in the world. You just don't know. – VB Apr 24 2012 at 16:01
Sounds simply wonderful I'm going to see if I can find it out by me looking for to the contrast of smell to flavor I love things that contradict the intial reaction. – CakeAndCookies Apr 24 2012 at 16:18
trjones, think dirty diaper. but tasty! – Renee Apr 24 2012 at 18:24
I've seen durian at the asian market before. I've yet to get it, but I'm pretty intrigued by a fruit that feels like an alligator. – Mscott Apr 25 2012 at 6:23

Boogers! Ok...not so much. Am working my way through cookbook called odd bits and I'm loving the weirder pieces of animal. Favorite includes beef cheeks. A very underutilized meat. (my farmer never used it, sent it to the renderer until I asked him for it and now he sells it-hmmmm wonder if I can get commission?) today we are making 1/2 a pastured pig's head. Plan...parboil, then drape in bacon (keeping it in the family) and roast. (its already cleaned and skinned). We also love sliced side meat vs bacon. Cheaper and you can add your own spices.

Have you seen the book Good Meat by Deborah Krasner? Awesome Nose-to-tail approach to all sorts of meat. – Molly Apr 25 2012 at 12:13
Thanks Molly, I will check it out! – Karin Apr 25 2012 at 15:17

I'm kind of in love with frog legs...I wish I knew how to bread & fry gizzards in a Paleo style because those suckers are good, too.

I don't actually eat any of these, but my family has always loved them (none of them are Paleo eaters, though) boiled pig ears with cabbage, turkey neck, tripe, cow brains (although they prefer them in a taco)

LOVE frog legs! So freaking good with basil. – Sunny Beaches Apr 24 2012 at 21:28
Frog leg lovers assemble ! – Higgs Apr 24 2012 at 22:42
We have bullfrogs living in the sump behind our house and listen to them talk to each other all night long. They'd probably move out if they knew I have been trying to figure out how to lure them under my fence for a main course! – MathGirl72 Apr 24 2012 at 23:09
You could dredge the gizzards in arrowroot flour, then dip in egg then coat in almond meal and fry. It's how I do my fried chicken. – Karin Apr 25 2012 at 0:16

Edible weeds................

some really good tasting weeds out there like pignut and burdock. – Scotty Von Porkchop May 2 2012 at 16:03

Coconut curry dishes...can of coconut milk, 2T curry paste, 2 tsp turmeric, dash of fish sauce and you have a killer sauce to use on any of your favorite meats and/or veggies. Even keep some of the curry sauce in the fridge as a veggie dip...good fats, sweet tasting and very versatile.

Fried worms. Seaweed soup. Piri-piri. Artichokes. Olives. Squid stew. Hey, what about live baby squid? Crispy fish eyes! Chestnuts. Flower nectar. Blood sausage. REAL pork rinds made by my mother! Roasted baby pig. Wine. Rabbit. Pigeons. Tripe. Fiddleheads?

For starchy stuff I'll say Yuca or Plantains.

Also, coconut aminos for umami.

Haven't seen yuca around yet, but OMG I have recently discovered that plantains fried in coconut oil are the food of the GODS. – PrairieProf Apr 25 2012 at 1:04

Classic out of Central and South America is a double-fry: First cut the plantain into 1-inch lengths and fry til golden. Then flatten each piece with a spatula or plate or pan so it forms a mini pancake then fry it a second time to set and lightly sprinkle with sea salt. – cerement Apr 25 2012 at 6:38
I, too, have recently discovered plantains cooked in coconut oil. Delicious!!! – DanielleO812 Apr 25 2012 at 12:43
If you have a latin mercado around you, you should be able to find yuca. I can find it at my regular supermarket. It looks like a woody brown tuber. Best and easiest is if you can find it in the freezer section with the skin already removed. Boil it in water, remove the woody, stringy center, smash a bit, put back in the pot with diced garlic, salt, and lime juice. Spread out on a baking sheet and put them under the broiler until they're lightly brown and crispy in spots. Alternately, you could make a garlicy/lime-y type of dressing and put that on after you remove from the oven. Delish. – Mama_Z Apr 25 2012 at 14:03
Forgot. Bacon grease/melted lard with the garlic/lime mixture. :) – Mama_Z Apr 25 2012 at 14:04

water kefir. Heals my gut in a really nice way.

Care to elaborate on the healing aspect of it? I've ordered some grains and am excited to start making some. – paleoguy11 Apr 25 2012 at 6:49
probiotics are really, really good for the gut. I have found kefir to be really helpful--I drink a few pints a day, and found that I can now tolerate foods that used to send me into a whole mess of reflux/nausea. Nausea, gas, reflux are all improved. – HA Apr 25 2012 at 17:42

salmon collar -- my local sushi place makes them. With seaweed salad, it's a great meal for about $8!

Ask your itemaie if the have Hamachi-Kama; it rocks! The same "collar" portion of a yellowtail tuna, quickly seared. – Blitherakt Apr 25 2012 at 4:36
Yes!! That's actually what I was trying to list but I couldn't remember the name. Better than salmon, yum. I'm going tomorrow night. – zot Apr 27 2012 at 3:48

Canned fish. Mostly Vital Choice no-salt-added salmon (I buy it by the case) & Crown Prince natural kipper snacks... especially if you drizzle some balsamic on the latter & toss it with a little minced red onion.

I'd have to agree with canned fish, such as tuna. I know the quality isn't the best but it serves its purpose if you're in a rush

Oooh! I would have to say edible weeds, wierd roots found at the farmers market, radishes, and parsley. Nomm nom nom I love my bitters
