I can't imagine paleo man shaved regularly, if at all. Shaving is a bit of a hassle, but girls seem to love smooth skin.

If you shave, do you shave in a more paleo (e.g. straight razor) way?

Nope, no shaving for me. I trimmed and shaved a bit for my daughter's wedding so the pictures would turn out nice, but no more shaving for me. – RedFlameOut Oct 1 2010 at 23:01
I would take a woman's input though I wouldn't lump them all together nor would I call them "girls". – ScottMGS Oct 2 2010 at 16:58

In this context, "girl" equals female that you are in a relationship with or want to be in a relationship with. I like the term! – Kamal Oct 5 2010 at 16:35
I am a girl and I happen to love facial hair. I don't really get the smooth skin thing. – sherpamelissa Jan 18 2011 at 2:36

I gave up shaving when I started to eat Paleo. I use my beard to store pork and duck drippings for future fuel on the long hunts. Beats tupperware although I could use a finer comb with an attached handy wipe.

Yeah but the REAL question is: Do WOMEN shave their LEGS less!?!?! (cuz men seem to love smooth skin..) ;-P

Stubble is no fun and shaved is hard to maintain. I wouldn't lump all men together, either. – ScottMGS Oct 2 2010 at 16:59
My comment seems a little harsh in high-sight. What I meant was: your legs = your choice. – ScottMGS Oct 2 2010 at 23:54

No, I still shave. I like the way Paleo-men ate...not how they looked.

What's going on here? Can we get some representation for beards? I've had one 90% of the time for the last six years.

I've only been paleo for a year, so the beard is pretty much independent of that. But somehow I expected that all the other paleos out there would be letting it grow as soon as they converted. Needless to say I am very disappointed in all of you.

[Trying to sound half-ironic, by the way.]

I have not changed my shaving habits. I'm not caveman LARPing.

EDIT: That said, my skin would not survive every-day shaving!

I've had beard for about a year, and I've been paleo for a bit less than that. I will say my hair seems to grow faster and thicker. At first it was a bit scratchy but you adapt. My wife loves my beard, BTW.

I don't have to less, but I tend to shave allot less regardless, just use clippers, no razor.

No shaving of haircut ever =

I'll stick with shaving for now :) I find having a beard is ichy and annoying. Also shaving is easier when you have clear skin.

Well, Matthew, you do look pretty fuzzy in your regular picture too! Then again, all that short red fur IS kinda cute.. ;-P – Eva Oct 1 2010 at 17:45

I shave once a week, not because of paleo but because I'm so busy... I DO more now coupled with my facial hair growing at least twice as fast means I'm often scruffy ... I call it rugged.. I hope

I've had long hair for years, and have not had a haircut that I paid for since 1997. I just bring the end o my hair around to where I can see it, then cut off the split ends with a sharp rock.. umm, I mean scissors.

My facial hair looks best as a goatee, and now that winter is incoming, it might be making a comeback.

I had a full beard going for a couple years before going Paleo. Still have it, and I have no plan to shave it off; I just keep it shaved from a finger's width above the adam's apple down, and get it trimmed to civilized-looking lengths in deference to my office work environment.

I think that there's probably some evolutionary reason for men having beards and women being smooth-faced. Perhaps a well-developed beard signals that its wearer is a healthy adult male, making him more attractive to women who haven't been culturally conditioned to find shaved faces attractive?

This actually raises the question of why shaving arose in the first place... but then again considering the things some women do to themselves in the name of beauty maybe that's just a dumb question. Humans will do pretty much anything to attract mates.

Shaving comes in and out of fashion, and it became widespread in Egypt in the 6th century B.C., and in Europe by the 4th century B.C. where Alexander the Great urged his soldiers to stay clean-shaven to prevent their beards from being pulled in battle. Some anthropologists say that it puts forth an image of youth, although some ancient Greeks thought the beard was a sign of virility. – Futureboy Jun 5 2011 at 0:26

I happen to shave a lot less frequently these days, but I think it's more a factor of me working in a casual environment (where I can even wear my Vibrams daily) and having a newborn at home.

But of course when I do shave, I use a paleo-approved non-packaged straight razor :)

Mmmmmm.....Don't shave much about once evey 2 weeks & even then only top lip & neck. Hardly get my hair cut (or wash it much for that matter!). However, I do use hair removal cream once a week for BSC! So I'm a caveman with a smooth chest.

I have found my facial hair growing much faster since going paleo - but I still just shave the 1x per day. I wonder if eating healthier and avoiding the phytoestrogens or other estradiol impacting factors (e.g. soy) have led to a higher testosterone and DHT level?

I did once grow my facial hair out for 9 weeks, and it looked ridiculous. In my personal opinion, most bearded men would look a whole lot better if they shaved.

I hate shaving, so I do it as little as possible. I only shave the neck area with any regularity. Here's an application of paleo-ish knowledge: coconut oil and lard both make for a fabulous pre-shave balm! Another one would be not to use soaps or aftershave.

I do shave a lot less today then I did when I was not primal. I never really enjoyed shaving and like my "look" better anyways... I clip when necessary and shave when I feel like it.
