I decided to try the Paleo diet due to a wheat and corn allergy I've ignored for years. After only three days on Paleo, my stomach and digestive issues/pain were 100% GONE.
Unfortunately, I've been really sick lately (flu, then Strep, then bronchitis...it has been an awful winter for my immune system) and was in bed for about three days straight. I hadn't done a good job of stocking up veggies, meat, fruit, etc. prior to that. So, I still had 'bad stuff' in my cupboards and felt I should eat something. I made some rice and was up all night with horrible stomach cramps. That surprised me, as I always considered rice a 'kind tummy' food.
Since then, I haven't been what you'd call strict with what I eat. I am getting back on track, though. Lack of energy, time and many other factors have led me to a few less-than-favorable meal choices.
Here is my question in a nutshell: what is your opinion on wheat and corn - if someone was going to eat one or the other, which do you feel is less harsh on your gut and body in general?
Easy, wheat is far worse. The gluten is damaging, and that can't be the whole story.
I still have tamales once a week and I do fine. Don't tell anyone.
Wheat is horrible, don't get near it.
The best answer is throw them both away!
First, I wouldn't indict rice if I were recovering from an acute infection when I had cramps from it. Who knows that home-made chicken broth wouldn't have done the same?
Second, if you have a documented allergy to corn and wheat the answer is NEITHER. If what you have is an intolerance, perhaps that could change based on improvements in your community of gut flora--that happened to me with yogurt and ice cream.
Please be careful. If I were coming off a nasty infection, I'd avoid all possible irritants and stick to tiny but gradually increasing sources of pre- and probiotics plus those foods known to soothe my gut and keep it happy. I wouldn't do any "am I over the problem" experiements for a while.
WHEAT (rye, barley and cross-contaminated grains) are the worst thing you can eat, period.
You want a silent killer? That's your answer.
Rice and potatoes are safer options. Sweet potatoes are even better.
30% of population is gluten sensitive and the numbers are steadily rising. WHEAT can kill you. Really. It can.
I agree with most people hear - ditch the grains. All of them. Veggies, veggies, veggies, veggies and more veggies. Meat (grass-fed) and fish.
I have a heirarchy of starch/grains that I use depending on what type if treat I'm having. Best treat is a sweet potato Next would be rice And then white potatoes. (I find rice settles better with me) If I really wanted a treat next would corn Lastly is wheat. And really I never eat that.
If you are allergic: neither. However, not to push corn or anything, when an allergist tests you positive for an allergy to one cereal grain (such as wheat), there is a high chance of a false positive for other cereal grains. Because wheat allergies are relatively common and corn allergies are quite rare, this is a common misdiagnoses. If you have none of the itchy-palate aspects of food allergies that shows potential for an anaphylactic reaction and you wanted to eat a grain on occasion other than rice, I would say corn is the much safer bet.
I'd say neither. If you're here, you already know how bad wheat is, so I'll save you the lecture on gluten, lectins, opioids, and so forth. If you don't know google around, or pick up Wheat Belly (which isn't a paleo book, btw.)
The problem with corn is that it also is a grain, not a vegetable, so it contains all the same kinds of bad stuff in it's out shell, and isn't very digestible, and it too can cause leaky gut, though not to such an extent. There is a traditional way to cook it with ashes, where the alkalinity of the ashes helps break down some of the phytates, and lets you get at the nutrients. Weston A Price also has details on how to disable the phytates, so if you must, go that route.
Mind you, all of this is if you're eating it properly prepared, and known-GMO free organic.
If you're talking about crap-in-a-bag, or corn shell tacos, all bets are off, as it hasn't been prepared properly, and worse, you're eating GMO corn, which makes its own BT-toxins which has a nasty arsenal of weaponry against your internal organs. Around 90% of corn in the USA is GMO.
So, for me, corn is on the same plane as wheat, soy, seed oils, "natural flavor", "artificial flavor", food coloring, preservatives and other non-foods: I don't buy'em, I don't eat'em, I avoid them like the plague.
if you're allergic, they're both terrible. If you were allergic to eggs or shellfish, I'd say either of those were worse than wheat or corn.
For ME, wheat is the worst by far, but I have celiac. For you wheat and corn are likely equally bad.
